{"id":202446,"date":"2016-07-25T11:45:41","date_gmt":"2016-07-25T15:45:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=202446"},"modified":"2023-08-08T11:47:56","modified_gmt":"2023-08-08T15:47:56","slug":"10-questions-with-alexandra-lamb-deans-doctoral-scholar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2016\/07\/10-questions-with-alexandra-lamb-deans-doctoral-scholar\/","title":{"rendered":"10 Questions With Alexandra Lamb, Dean\u2019s Doctoral Scholar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>In this\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/education.uconn.edu\/?s=10+questions\">new series<\/a>, the Neag School will be catching up with students, alumni, faculty, and others throughout the year to give you a glimpse into their Neag School experience and their current career, research, or community activities.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Incoming\u00a0Ph.D. student Alexandra Lamb\u00a0will join the Neag School this fall as part of the second cohort of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/education.uconn.edu\/deans-doctoral-scholars\/\">Dean\u2019s Doctoral Scholars<\/a>. The program provides full tuition for four years plus a stipend to promising Ph.D. candidates. (Photo courtesy of Alexandra Lamb)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Hometown:\u00a0<\/strong>I am\u00a0proudly from Brooklyn, N.Y.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where were you working previous to Neag School?\u00a0<\/strong>I was a middle school humanities teacher and technology integrator at the Berkeley Carroll School, an independent school in Brooklyn, N.Y. I was also the director of the Creative Arts Program, a summer arts camp at Berkeley Carroll.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What appealed to you about the Neag School and\/or the\u00a0Dean\u2019s\u00a0Doctoral\u00a0Scholar Program?\u00a0<\/strong>The Neag School offered an opportunity to reflect and think deeply\u00a0in a community of dedicated and creative scholars\u00a0about leadership and the organizational systems in American education.\u00a0UConn shows its dedication to growth and developing a community of\u00a0preeminent thinkers in the world of education through its Dean\u2019s Doctoral Scholars Program. That was something I very much wanted to be a part of.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are your research interests and what will be your specific Ph.D. area of study at the Neag School?\u00a0<\/strong>I am in the Learning, Leadership, and Educational Policy Program with a concentration in leadership and education policy. I believe that one of the core challenges in the current American educational system is a crisis of leadership. I am looking to research how we can better select for leaders and put them in positions to effect change.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you hope to ultimately achieve in pursuing your\u00a0doctoral\u00a0research into these particular areas of focus at the Neag School?<\/strong>\u00a0I hope to change the leadership structures and pathways in urban schools to allow for stronger, more supportive, and more successful educational communities.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe Neag School offered an opportunity to reflect and think deeply\u00a0in a community of dedicated and creative scholars\u00a0about leadership and the organizational systems in American education.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>What does it mean to you to be named a\u00a0Dean\u2019s\u00a0Doctoral\u00a0Scholar?\u00a0<\/strong>It\u2019s a great honor. It\u2019s exciting to be recognized for my\u00a0past, current, and future contributions to the scholarly and K-12 educational communities. \u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Describe your proudest career moment.\u00a0<\/strong>Launching and sustaining a successful and fully integrated 1:1 iPad program at my current school. Coaching teachers, students, and families to use technology in meaningful and diverse ways has been a great challenge and an important achievement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are your hobbies?\u00a0<\/strong>I love getting outside,\u00a0riding my bike,\u00a0and running.
