{"id":203596,"date":"2012-08-14T16:08:56","date_gmt":"2012-08-14T16:08:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/?p=12737"},"modified":"2025-01-30T21:46:49","modified_gmt":"2025-01-31T02:46:49","slug":"engineering-ambassadors-engaging-middle-schoolers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2012\/08\/engineering-ambassadors-engaging-middle-schoolers\/","title":{"rendered":"Engineering Ambassadors: Engaging Middle Schoolers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Members of <a href=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/ambassadors2a-copy.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-12803 img-responsive lazyload\" title=\"12p0419\" data-src=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/ambassadors2a-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"233\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 243px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 243\/233;\" \/><\/a>UConn\u2019s UTC Engineering Ambassadors visited East Hartford Middle School in late July to engage 60 middle school students participating in a summer program offered by CPEP (Connecticut Pre-Engineering Program).\u00a0 CPEP is a non-profit educational organization whose goals are to encourage positive attitudes, enhance knowledge and influence educational and career choices among underrepresented students with respect to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) disciplines.\u00a0 The students, from East Hartford and Glastonbury, enjoyed the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities and learn more about the role of engineering in everyday life.<\/p>\n<p>The CPEP summer camp is a five-week educational program for middle school students, to mitigate summer learning loss by increasing their math proficiency.\u00a0 In advance of t<a href=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/ambassadors2c-copy.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12801 alignright img-responsive lazyload\" title=\"12p0419\" data-src=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/ambassadors2c-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"230\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 240px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 240\/230;\" \/><\/a>he visit, the UTC Ambassadors \u2013 nine engineering students attending UConn and five students from the Pennsylvania State University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Worcester Polytechnic Institute \u2013 worked with CPEP management to design a variety of afternoon activities. The visit was organized by Ambassadors Monica Smith (Eurotech) of UConn and Victoria Stratton of WPI, along with CPEP Board member, Mike Reiter of Pratt &amp; Whitney.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Armed with four fun \u201crepresentative\u201d props, the Ambassadors led a variety of engineering design challenges. An activity involving brownie mix and vegetable oil effectively conveyed the different engineering roles involved in cleaning up an oil spill.\u00a0 In another activity, marshmallow and toothpick assemblies designed and built by student teams were subjected to the rigorous vibrations provided by a homemade shake table, with the goal of having the structure implode in upon itself when failure occurred.<\/p>\n<p>The Eng<a href=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/ambassadors2b-copy.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12802 alignleft img-responsive lazyload\" title=\"12p0419\" data-src=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/ambassadors2b-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"233\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 243px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 243\/233;\" \/><\/a>ineering Ambassadors program was originated by United Technologies Corporation (UTC) as a way to enrich the engineering pipeline. The company provides financial, training and advisory support to the Ambassadors, who are undergraduate engineering students at the four schools.
