{"id":203604,"date":"2012-09-04T18:28:21","date_gmt":"2012-09-04T18:28:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/?p=12977"},"modified":"2025-01-30T21:35:25","modified_gmt":"2025-01-31T02:35:25","slug":"new-faculty-enhance-engineering-reach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2012\/09\/new-faculty-enhance-engineering-reach\/","title":{"rendered":"New Faculty Enhance Engineering Reach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The School of Engineering welcomes nine new faculty members who bring diverse expertise that will\u00a0complement our research, academic and professional missions.\u00a0 We are pleased to introduce them here.<\/p>\n<p>The Chemical, Materials &amp; Biomolecular Engineering (CMBE) Department welcomes\u00a0four new faculty members in the Chemical Engineering Program and Materials Science Program.\u00a0 Joining the department as an assistant professor in the Chemical Engineering Program is Dr. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmbe.engr.uconn.edu\/profile_wagstrom_kristina.html\">Kristina Wagstrom<\/a><\/strong>, who recently completed a three-year post-doctoral position at the University of Minnesota, where she studied the air quality impacts resulting from biofuels using a full lifecycle analysis approach and a detailed air quality model. Dr. Wagstrom received her Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University in 2009. Her current research focuses on improvements and novel applications of modeling to understand the impacts of air pollution to human health.<\/p>\n<p>Durin<a href=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/new-wagstrom.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-12910 img-responsive lazyload\" title=\"new-wagstrom\" data-src=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/new-wagstrom.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"115\" height=\"115\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 115px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 115\/115;\" \/><\/a>g the 2012-13 academic year, Dr. Wagstrom will divide her time between UConn and her appointment as a Science and Technology Policy Fellow within the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.\u00a0 In her advisory role, Dr. Wagstrom will evaluate current science and policy relating to air pollution and climate, and contribute to EPA\u2019s funding priorities to encourage research in areas aimed at filling the gaps in our current knowledge.\u00a0Learn more about Dr. Wagstrom <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmbe.engr.uconn.edu\/news2012\/Wagstrom-Kristina2012.html\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/new-brown.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-12917 img-responsive lazyload\" title=\"new brown\" data-src=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/new-brown.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"115\" height=\"115\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 115px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 115\/115;\" \/><\/a>Also joining the CMBE Department, as an Assistant Research Professor in the Chemical Engineering Program at UConn\u2019s Avery Point campus, is Dr. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmbe.engr.uconn.edu\/profile_brown_kevin.html\">Kevin Brown<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 His primary research interests include complex systems, networks systems biology, and biomolecular signaling pathways.\u00a0 Dr. Brown received his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Cornell University in 2003. He completed two postdoctoral appointments, first in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard University (2004-07) and subsequently in the Department of Physics and Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies (ICB) at the University of California, Santa Barbara (2007-11). He remained with the ICB as an Assistant Project Scientist until joining UConn.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/new-dongare.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-12916 img-responsive lazyload\" title=\"new dongare\" data-src=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/new-dongare.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"115\" height=\"115\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 115px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 115\/115;\" \/><\/a>Dr. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmbe.engr.uconn.edu\/profile_dongare_avinash.html\">Avinash Dongare<\/a><\/strong> joins the Materials Science &amp; Engineering Program in the CMBE Department as an assistant professor.\u00a0 He will also be associated with the Institute of Materials Science.\u00a0 Dr. Dongare received his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia (UVA), Charlottesville, in 2008.\u00a0 He went on to serve as a National Research Council Research Associate for the U.S. Army before working as a visiting research scientist at UVA.\u00a0 Most recently, Dr. Dongare held a position as Senior Research Associate at North Carolina State University.\u00a0 His current research interests focus on the use of large-scale materials modeling methods across multiple scales to design materials with superior properties for the next generation of high-tech applications.\u00a0 Read more about Dr. Dongare <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmbe.engr.uconn.edu\/news2012\/Dongare-Avinash2012.html\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/new-Nakhmanson.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-12913 img-responsive lazyload\" title=\"new Nakhmanson\" data-src=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/new-Nakhmanson.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"115\" height=\"115\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 115px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 115\/115;\" \/><\/a>Another new faculty member joining the Materials Science &amp; Engineering Program in the CMBE Department is Dr. <strong>Serge Nakhmanson<\/strong>.\u00a0 Dr. Nakhmanson received his Ph.D. in physics at Ohio University, Athens, OH in 2001.\u00a0 He continued his research as a post-doctoral research associate at North Carolina State University (2001-04) and Rutgers University (2004-06).\u00a0 Most recently, Dr. Nakhmanson was an Assistant Scientist in the Materials Science Division of Argonne National Laboratory.\u00a0 He has published 35 scholarly papers in peer-reviewed journals, including <em>Science<\/em>, <em>Physical Review Letters<\/em> and <em>Physical Review B<\/em>, among others, and written two book chapters. His research interests include ferroelectric materials, electronic structure calculations using density functional theory, and the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect. He will also be associated with the Institute of Materials Science.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/new-Konduri.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-12914 img-responsive lazyload\" title=\"new Konduri\" data-src=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/new-Konduri.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"115\" height=\"115\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 115px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 115\/115;\" \/><\/a>The Civil &amp; Environmental Engineering Department welcomes Dr. <strong>Karthik Konduri<\/strong> as an assistant professor specializing in transportation systems, with interests in travel behavior and time use analysis, travel demand modeling and forecasting, transportation planning and policy, integrative modeling of land use and transportation, econometric and statistical modeling, transportation engineering, traffic simulation, and related activities. Dr. Konduri earned his Ph.D., and recently completed post-doctoral research in the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment, at Arizona State University, Tempe. He has published extensively in <em>Transportation Research Record<\/em>, <em>Transportation<\/em>, and other respected journals, and was a co-recipient of the 2012 Transportation Research Board\u2019s Pyke Johnson Award for the best paper in the field of transportation systems planning and administration.<\/p>\n<p>Two new faculty members join the Electrical &amp; Computer Engineering Department as assistant professors: Drs. <strong>Ali Bazzi<\/strong> and <strong>Omer Khan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/new-bazzi.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-12918 img-responsive lazyload\" title=\"new bazzi\" data-src=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/new-bazzi.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"115\" height=\"115\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 115px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 115\/115;\" \/><\/a>Dr. Bazzi, who received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in December 2010, brings expertise in the power engineering area.\u00a0 He has gained industrial experience working at Delphi Electronics &amp; Safety for the past year. His research interests include power electronics design, control, optimization, and reliability modeling in motor drives and solar photovoltaic applications. Dr. Bazzi is also interested in renewable energy integration in micro-grids, and real-time control and optimization of energy systems in general. His teaching and research expertise spans the general fields of computer architecture, digital system design, and VLSI, with particular interest in scalability of on-chip memory, networks and communication in future multicore architectures; hardware\/software co-design; VLSI and digital systems design; and simulation and construction of architecture prototypes. Pierce<\/strong>.\u00a0 He received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering with minor in mathematics from Stanford University.\u00a0 Since then, Dr. Pierce has been on the faculty of the Institute of Biomechanics at Graz University, Austria.
