Computer Engineering at UConn, and alumnus Dr. <strong>Faisal Hossain<\/strong> (Ph.D., Environmental Engineering \u201904) were toasted by the UConn <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uconnalumni.com\/\">Alumni Association<\/a> during a gala event held on Friday, October 12.\u00a0 Dr. Zhu was presented the <em>2012 Faculty Excellence in Research and Creativity (Sciences)<\/em>, and Dr. Hossain was awarded one of two <em>Graduate of the Last <a href=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/uchc2-zhu.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12170 alignleft img-responsive lazyload\" title=\"uchc2 zhu\" data-src=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/uchc2-zhu.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"140\" height=\"216\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 140px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 140\/216;\" \/><\/a>Decade (G.O.L.D.)<\/em> honors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Zhu, who joined UConn in 1998 and directs the Optical and Ultrasound Imaging Laboratory, was honored for her groundbreaking work in developing a number of unique imaging devices to enable more accurate diagnoses and treatment of suspected breast and ovarian cancers.\u00a0 One device combines near infrared light with ultrasound as an aid in breast cancer detection and characterization; a second, transvaginal and endoscopic-based device combines ultrasound, photoacoustic imaging and high resolution optical coherence tomography in a single probe to enhance ovarian cancer diagnosis and surgical intervention.\u00a0 Dr. Zhu\u2019s breast imaging device is being field tested at Hartford Hospital and the UConn Health Center with patient volunteers to confirm their effectiveness.\u00a0\u00a0 She is a Fellow of SPIE, an inducted member of the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering (CASE) and the recipient of a Connecticut Technology Council 2007 Women of Innovation Research Innovation and Leadership award.<\/p>\n<p>In nominating Dr. Zhu for the award, Dr. Rajeev Bansal, Head of the Electrical &amp; Computer Engineering Department, noted \u201cHer work has contributed to biopsy-free breast tissue evaluation and promises major advances in the non-invasive detection of ovarian cancer.\u201d Read more about Dr. Zhu\u2019s research <a href=\"http:\/\/www.engr.uconn.edu\/clinicaltrialsforbreastcancerdevice.php\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.engr.uconn.edu\/zhu07.php\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tntech.edu\/people\/fhossain?Itemid=477\">Hossain<\/a><\/strong>, who won one of two G.O.L.D. awards, is an associate professor at Tennessee Technical University (TTU).\u00a0 \u00a0He was honored for his significant contribut<a href=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Faisal-Hossain1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-12921 img-responsive lazyload\" title=\"Faisal Hossain1\" data-src=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Faisal-Hossain1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"177\" height=\"224\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 177px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 177\/224;\" \/><\/a>ions in fields advancing the use of satellite remote sensing products, understanding remote sensing uncertainty, overcoming trans-boundary limitations of downstream countries to water forecasting, and understanding the impact of large water infrastructures (notably dams).<\/p>\n<p>He was also recently selected by the American Geophysical Union to receive the prestigious 2012 Charles Falkenberg Award, which honors individuals who have \u201ccontributed to the quality of life, economic opportunities and stewardship of the planet through the use of Earth science information and to the public awareness of the importance of understanding our planet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Hossain has championed a space-based data information system that would leverage current and future Earth science satellite missions as vital data sources that may contribute to accurate precipitation prediction and water management. \u00a0He was nominated by Dr. Emmanouil Anagnostou (Civil &amp;
