Laurencin<\/span><\/a><\/span>, Van Dusen Distinguished Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, founding director of the UConn Health Center\u2019s <span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><a href=\"http:\/\/regenerativeengineering.uchc.edu\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Institute for Regenerative Engineering<\/span><\/a><\/span>, and University Professor at UConn is the inventor of the L-C Ligament, the first bioengineered matrix shown to completely regenerate ligament tissue inside the knee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur large animal studies were completed over the last two years.\u00a0 The technology may be a new solution for perhaps hundreds of thousands of individuals with ACL tears,\u201d Laurencin says. \u201cIt also shows the promise that regenerative engineering can offer.\u201d<a href=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/bio2a.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-16785 img-responsive lazyload\" alt=\"bio2a\" data-src=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/bio2a-300x245.jpg\" width=\"240\" height=\"196\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 240px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 240\/196;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A Phase 1 clinical trial is underway in Europe where the first patient was implanted with the L-C Ligament on June 18 by a surgical team in the Netherlands led by Dr. Kees van Egmond, a Dutch orthopaedic surgeon.
