{"id":203728,"date":"2014-10-28T14:06:18","date_gmt":"2014-10-28T14:06:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/?p=19453"},"modified":"2025-01-28T21:48:46","modified_gmt":"2025-01-29T02:48:46","slug":"first-cyberseed-event-combines-cybersecurity-competition-and-discussion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2014\/10\/first-cyberseed-event-combines-cybersecurity-competition-and-discussion\/","title":{"rendered":"First CyberSEED Event Combines Cybersecurity Competition and Discussion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than 350 people attended the first-ever CyberSEED Cybersecurity, Education &amp; Diversity Challenge, an event that combined\u00a0expert speakers\u00a0and\u00a0three cybersecurity competitions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19444\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19444\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Simpson-e1414434582781.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19444 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Simpson-e1414434582781.jpg\" alt=\"Simpson\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/220;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19444\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rear Admiral David Simpson (ret.), Chief of the Federal Communications Commission\u2019s Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The two-day conference took place Oct. 20 and 21 and was organized by the Center of Excellence for Security Innovation (CSI), a partnership between Comcast and the\u00a0UConn School of Engineering\u2019s Center for Hardware Assurance, Security, and Engineering (CHASE).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we exceeded the expectations in many ways,\u201d said Mark Tehranipoor, Director, Comcast Center of Excellence (CSI). \u201cBecause this was the first CyberSEED event for us, we thought \u2018Well, we\u2019ll use it as an experience and learn from this.\u2019 But within a couple months, it became clear that we didn\u2019t have time for \u2018learning from this.\u2019 We just have to take it to the next level right away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0ambitious event\u00a0brought more than 40 teams from universities across the U.S. to the UConn campus to compete in three unique cybersecurity challenges for more than $100,000 in prizes. The competition played out over the\u00a0two days in\u00a0the same venue &#8211; the Lewis B. Rome Commons &#8211;\u00a0that hosted some of most respected experts in the field of cybersecurity.<\/p>\n<p>The conference featured more than 20 speakers, including keynote addresses from Rear Admiral David Simpson (ret.), Chief of the Federal Communications Commission\u2019s Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau; Cheri Caddy, Director for Cybersecurity Policy Integration and Outreach, National Security Staff, The White House; and Donna Dodson, Chief Cyber Security Advisor, NIST.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19445\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19445\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Caddy-e1414434499221.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19445 size-full img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/Caddy-e1414434499221.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"381\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/381;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19445\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cheri Caddy, Director for Cybersecurity Policy Integration and Outreach, National Security Staff, The White House<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Speakers and panel discussions addressed\u00a0a wide range of topics related to cybersecurity \u2013 from protecting against international-level cyberattacks, to how businesses can protect their customers. Tehranipoor said he was particularly impressed with the panel discussions that featured all three of the major players in cybersecurity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you bring academia, government and industry into one room and let them talk, I think it\u2019s extremely beneficial,\u201d he said. \u201cThe three sides have to hear each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each is coming at the issue with a slightly different approach, he said, especially in regard to confidentiality.\u00a0Talking with each other helps resolve those differences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt events likes these, they come together and talk about what they want, and I think there\u2019s always ways to come up with common ground,\u201d he said. \u201cI think meeetings like this could have a major impact in the way we\u00a0address cybersecurity issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The conference also featured a VIP tour of the CSI lab, which opened earlier this year.
