{"id":204921,"date":"2023-09-25T07:30:07","date_gmt":"2023-09-25T11:30:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=204921"},"modified":"2023-09-22T15:46:45","modified_gmt":"2023-09-22T19:46:45","slug":"neag-school-launches-new-licensed-professional-counselor-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2023\/09\/neag-school-launches-new-licensed-professional-counselor-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Neag School Launches New Licensed Professional Counselor Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Connecticut is currently facing a large shortage of mental health professionals just as state residents need those individuals more than ever following the mental stress and trauma many experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe levels of trauma, anxiety, isolation, and social anxiety that children and adults are experiencing is unprecedented, and an adequate workforce of trained licensed counselors to meet the need is simply not available,\u201d says Sara Renzulli, assistant professor-in-residence in the Neag School of Education\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/epsy.education.uconn.edu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Department of Educational Psychology<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To meet this demand across the state and nation, the Neag School has created <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/counseling.education.uconn.edu\/programs\/licensed-professional-counselor-lpc-online-graduate-certificate\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">a new Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) Certificate program<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which was approved by the University\u2019s Board of Trustees earlier this year and is directed by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/education.uconn.edu\/person\/sara-renzulli\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Renzulli<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The 18-credit program is fully online, with all classes and clinical experiences occurring in the summer, and allows graduates to apply to the Connecticut Department of Public Health for their Licensed Professional Counselor-Associate (LPC-A) certification. Once an individual completes the required 3,000 hours of post-graduate supervised counseling work, they can then apply for full LPC licensure, which enables them to open their own practice and charge insurance for counseling services.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n  <p>The levels of trauma, anxiety, isolation, and social anxiety that children and adults are experiencing is unprecedented, and an adequate workforce of trained licensed counselors to meet the need is simply not available. <cite> &#8212 Sara Renzulli, assistant professor-in-residence<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThis innovative and important new program will contribute significantly to the Neag School of Education\u2019s mission to better support communities across Connecticut,\u201d says Michael Coyne, professor and head of the Department of Educational Psychology. \u201cOur counseling faculty are national experts and scholars who are ideally positioned to lead efforts to address this critical need in Connecticut for high quality licensed counselors.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The new certificate program is a logical extension of the Neag School\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/counseling.education.uconn.edu\/programs\/ma-in-educational-psychology-in-school-counseling\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">master\u2019s program in counselor education<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which includes much of the content that is required to apply for an LPC certification but not all. The new program will allow students to complete the remaining content areas and internship hours needed for an LPC: professional orientation to mental health counseling; addiction and substance abuse; trauma and crisis counseling; diagnosis and treatment of mental and emotional disorders; and a 600-hour clinical mental health internship. In fact, a small pilot cohort enrolled in the certificate program this past summer and is entirely composed of current counselor education master\u2019s students.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe certificate is designed to enable current and former graduate students in school counseling, as well as current school counselors, to participate,\u201d Renzulli says. \u201cTherefore, all coursework and clinical internships will be conducted over the summer to best fit students\u2019 schedules. Renzulli and her colleagues <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/education.uconn.edu\/person\/diandra-prescod\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Diandra Prescod<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/education.uconn.edu\/person\/latoya-haynes-thoby\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Latoya Haynes-Thoby<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, who will also teach in the new certificate program, have partnered with Hartford Healthcare to facilitate internships for all certificate students if they don\u2019t have another internship location lined up. Hartford Healthcare is one of Connecticut&#8217;s leading providers of behavioral health services and offers unparalleled clinical experiences for UConn\u2019s LPC certificate program students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span
