{"id":205093,"date":"2013-09-22T10:21:23","date_gmt":"2013-09-22T14:21:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=205093"},"modified":"2023-09-25T10:33:47","modified_gmt":"2023-09-25T14:33:47","slug":"neag-school-of-educations-professor-to-examine-teacher-evaluation-in-new-haven","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2013\/09\/neag-school-of-educations-professor-to-examine-teacher-evaluation-in-new-haven\/","title":{"rendered":"Neag School of Education\u2019s Professor to Examine Teacher Evaluation in New Haven"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/education.uconn.edu\/morgaen-donaldson\/\">Morgaen Donaldso<\/a>n, an assistant professor of educational leadership at UConn\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.education.uconn.edu\/\">Neag School of Education<\/a>, has been awarded a Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.naeducation.org\/\">National Academy of Education (NAEd)<\/a>\u00a0to study how incorporating student academic achievement in teachers\u2019 performance evaluations affects teachers\u2019 motivation and work behaviors.<\/p>\n<p>Donaldson will focus her research and data gathering on New Haven\u2019s large and diverse public school system, which according to Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten and others has as developed a \u201cmodel\u201d teacher evaluation system.<\/p>\n<p>The study will be one of the first of its kind in the nation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of federal policies like Race to the Top and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/nclb\/landing.jhtml\">No Child Left Behind\u00a0<\/a>waiver requirements\u00a0that target teacher performance as a primary lever for improving schools, more than 40 states have changed their laws in recent years to incorporate student achievement in teacher evaluations. Yet little published research examines the effects of doing this,\u201d Donaldson explained. \u201cMy study will provide early findings about how those at the center of this reform \u2013 teachers \u2013 are responding to such changes, and how linking student achievement and teacher evaluation is influencing teachers\u2019 attitudes, behaviors and effectiveness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donaldson was one of just 20 educational fellows selected from a competitive pool of more than 200 applications, said NAEd Senior Program Officer Phillip Perin.<\/p>\n<p>Now in its 27<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0year, the NAEd fellowship program is designed to support early-career scholars whose research has the potential to make \u201csignificant\u201d contributions to the fields of education and educational research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe the fellowships enhance the future of education research by developing new talent in the many disciplines and fields\u201d, said Perin added.<\/p>\n<p>A research associate at the Neag School\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cepa.uconn.edu\/\">Center for Policy Analysis<\/a>, Donaldson has also studied the implementation of Connecticut\u2019s new educator evaluation system, the effects of school organization and leadership on science achievement, and the trade-offs associated with different teacher evaluation instruments, among other areas. Her findings have been published in\u00a0<i>American Educational Research Journal<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Educational Administration Quarterly<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Teachers College Record<\/i>,\u00a0<i>Educational Leadership<\/i>, and other scholarly and practitioner journals.<\/p>\n<p>A former urban public school teacher, Donaldson was a founding faculty member of the Boston Arts Academy, Boston\u2019s public high school for the arts.
