{"id":205247,"date":"2023-09-28T13:00:19","date_gmt":"2023-09-28T17:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=205247"},"modified":"2023-09-28T11:02:19","modified_gmt":"2023-09-28T15:02:19","slug":"husky-harvest-comes-to-uconn-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2023\/09\/husky-harvest-comes-to-uconn-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Husky Harvest Comes to UConn Health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UConn Health is joining other UConn campuses in establishing a <a href=\"https:\/\/huskyharvest.uconn.edu\/\">Husky Harvest<\/a> food pantry for students and staff.<\/p>\n<p>While the Husky Harvest in Storrs got a <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2023\/09\/paige-bueckers-chegg-inc-announce-their-support-for-husky-harvest-in-storrs\/\">visit from UConn basketball star Paige Bueckers Sept.\u00a025<\/a>, Suzanne Tate, director of curricular affairs in the UConn School of Medicine, already had started stocking the shelves at the Husky Harvest pantry in Farmington that will open in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p><!--StartFragment --><\/p>\n<p class=\"pf0\"><span class=\"cf0\"><blockquote>\n  <p>We intend it to be inviting. We want to make sure that it\u2019s for the community and by the community. <cite> &#8212 Suzanne Tate<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/blockquote><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment --><\/p>\n<p>The idea rose from a survey of medical students last year, to which 30% of respondents reported experiencing food insecurity in the past year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to see what we could do to address that, to make sure that we\u2019re not just addressing the student\u2019s academic needs, but we want to be wholly supportive, in a holistic sense, of their well-being,\u201d Tate says. \u201cIt seemed like one of the most tangible things that we could address with them. So we started looking into it and we found that all the other campuses either had a food pantry or were in the process of opening one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tate and Dr. Melissa Held, senior associate dean for medical student education, are overseeing UConn Health\u2019s Husky Harvest, with the vision of turning operations over to a motivated group of students. The pantry will serve both students and staff.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This intervention has been long overdue for our school,&#8221; Held says. &#8220;I&#8217;ve wanted to create a food pantry here for the past few years. Professional school is stressful \u2014 financial and food insecurity challenges only add to that stress. (Photo by Chris DeFrancesco)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The student co-directors are MD\/Ph.D. candidate Caroline Guild and MD\/MPH candidate Dean Kim.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really a believer in food as medicine,\u201d Kim says. \u201cI\u2019m really passionate about food insecurity and nutrition policy. The first delivery to stock the shelves came by way of Connecticut Foodshare, more than 500 pounds of nonperishables.<\/p>\n<p>Initial hours are Mondays 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., Wednesdays noon to 1 p.m., and Fridays 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., open to anyone with a UConn ID badge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to make it something where there\u2019s no stigma,\u201d Tate says. \u201cWe want to make it so that it is accessible to anyone who has any barriers, any sort of restriction to having access to food. We intend it to be inviting. We want to make sure that it\u2019s for the community and by the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The plan is for an official grand opening Oct. 18, followed by expanded hours. By then, two refrigerators and a freezer will be in place to enable offerings of fresh produce, dairy, meat, and frozen goods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had an anonymous donor through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foundation.uconn.edu\/\">UConn Foundation<\/a> give us $10,000 for startup,\u201d Tate says. \u201cAnd the <a href=\"https:\/\/theneagfoundation.org\/\">Neag Foundation<\/a> gave every branch, including us, even though we weren\u2019t open yet, $12,000 in startup funds specifically for groceries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those wishing to help sustain Husky Harvest at UConn Health can make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foundation.uconn.edu\/fund\/school-of-medicine-food-pantry\/\">monetary contributions through the UConn Foundation<\/a>.
