{"id":207695,"date":"2023-12-07T08:00:19","date_gmt":"2023-12-07T13:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=207695"},"modified":"2023-12-06T16:04:54","modified_gmt":"2023-12-06T21:04:54","slug":"mpa-executive-track-program-expands-to-uconn-stamford","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2023\/12\/mpa-executive-track-program-expands-to-uconn-stamford\/","title":{"rendered":"MPA Executive Track Program Expands to UConn Stamford"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The School of Public Policy\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/publicpolicy.uconn.edu\/mpa\/executive-track\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Master of Public Administration (MPA) executive track program<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> will expand to UConn Stamford in Fall 2024, providing a new opportunity for professionals in Fairfield County to advance their careers in the public and nonprofit sectors.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cOur faculty felt strongly that we need to be part of the career success of public servants in this part of the state,\u201d says Mohamad Alkadry, professor and director of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/publicpolicy.uconn.edu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">School of Public Policy<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. &#8220;[It\u2019s] an area that is not being served by any public institution offering an MPA degree.\u201d Alkadry notes it&#8217;s also the only Connecticut program accredited by the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration (NASPAA).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The program, which has operated at UConn Hartford since 2017, will offer a 36-credit degree in a cohort model that meets on Saturdays. Students pursue courses in project management, public finance and budgeting, and economic analysis and can choose a focus area tailored to their interests. Previous tracks have included executive leadership, law and public policy, state and local government management, and urban planning.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt\u2019s purposefully in person, so you get that interaction with your professor,\u201d explains Catherine Guarino, director of student and academic affairs in the School of Public Policy. \u201cYou\u2019re going to learn from your peers in the classroom.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The program is designed to be completed in two years. Guarino says the supportive environment becomes a second family for many students.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt\u2019s very interactive,\u201d she says. \u201cThere\u2019s something special about being around other people who are working full-time, have families they\u2019re taking care of, and other life responsibilities.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jennifer Orlikoff, dean and chief administrative officer at UConn Stamford, says the cohort model also allows students to build a strong professional network.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAdding it to our campus is a logical extension of this important program, given the number of business enterprises, Fortune 500 companies, and nonprofit organizations established in the city and the region,\u201d says Orlikoff. \u201cStudents will greatly appreciate and benefit from having the opportunity to pursue this degree in close proximity to where they work.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Applications for the MPA executive track program are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/publicpolicy.uconn.edu\/apply\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">open<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for both campuses. Priority will be given to applicants who submit their materials by Feb. 15.
