Disclosure \u2014 sharing OUD history or treatment \u2014 can break this cycle by facilitating social connection during OUD treatment.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The project is headed by Earnshaw, an associate professor of human development and family sciences at the University of Delaware (UD), and Zachary Collier, assistant professor in UConn\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rmme.education.uconn.edu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Research Methods, Measurement, and Evaluation<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> program in the Neag School of Education. Collier brings a deep expertise in data modeling to their collaboration, while Earnshaw boasts years of research in health inequities and stigma. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Earnshaw says the inspiration for \u201cDisclosing Recovery\u201d came from her work with the Boston Children\u2019s Hospital <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.childrenshospital.org\/programs\/adolescent-substance-use-and-addiction-program\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Adolescent Substance Use &amp; Addiction Program<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in 2015. There, she was conducting a qualitative study of adolescents and their parents. It includes role-playing practices for each participant\u2019s personal \u201cbest case\u201d and \u201cworst case\u201d disclosure scenarios and prompts participants to write their own scripts.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Reflection opportunities encourage participants to plan out all the particulars and consider what they want out of their disclosure:<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Why are they thinking about disclosing? What exactly do they want to disclose? What format do they want their disclosure to take \u2013 an in-person conversation, or a letter or email? Do they feel ready to make the disclosure now, or do they want to wait until later in their recovery?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The intervention itself has been well received in pilot testing. In the next phase, the researchers will evaluate its long-term efficacy, following 480 participants. The team hopes that the data will indicate improved treatment outcomes for individuals in recovery from OUD who practiced disclosure through \u201cDisclosing Recovery.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe hypothesize that this could be due to changes in relationships,\u201d Earnshaw says. \u201cBased on our pilot data, we think that folks who receive our intervention may receive, for example, more social support. They might become closer to the people they are disclosing to, and they also may receive less stigma from those people.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In turn, the researchers hope that their intervention could lead to improved public health outcomes, including greater OUD treatment success and fewer overdoses. Variables like participants\u2019 gender and age, and even the person they are disclosing to \u2013 whether it is a parent, a significant other, or an employer, for instance \u2013 will each impact the data, and Collier\u2019s job is to interpret this.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;I\u2019m always excited about cases where you\u2019re able to say, \u2018Alright, so this particular variable is having a direct effect on an outcome \u2013 but hey, there\u2019s this whole outside background characteristic that has never been explored before,\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cNow that we have the data to explore it, we can see that this background characteristic is providing some sort of indirect effect as well. They clicked immediately, bonding over their shared interest in making the world a better place through socially responsible research.
