{"id":210276,"date":"2024-02-28T10:08:29","date_gmt":"2024-02-28T15:08:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=210276"},"modified":"2024-02-28T10:16:26","modified_gmt":"2024-02-28T15:16:26","slug":"new-department-of-social-and-critical-inquiry-established-in-clas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2024\/02\/new-department-of-social-and-critical-inquiry-established-in-clas\/","title":{"rendered":"New Department of Social and Critical Inquiry Established in CLAS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The UConn Board of Trustees voted at its meeting Wednesday to establish a new Department of Social and Critical Inquiry in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:80}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The new unit will draw on existing research and teaching strengths to investigate <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">issues across historical, political, socio-economic, and cultural realms. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:80}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/boardoftrustees.media.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2924\/2024\/02\/Att.-17-Social-Critical-Inquiry-Dept.-02-28-24-BOT.pdf\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Department of Social and Critical Inquiry<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> unites four CLAS formerly non-departmentally organized units into a single department: the American Studies Program, the Asian and Asian American Studies Institute, the Native American and Indigenous Studies Initiative, and the Women\u2019s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:80}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The department is the result of many years of discussions among faculty from the four areas, says Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Collaborative Programs, and Faculty Development, Kate Capshaw. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThis formation marks a significant step forward given the years these groups have spent working towards a shared structure, and it signals the College and University&#8217;s commitment to these units\u2019 sustained growth,\u201d Capshaw says. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt is exciting to be able to develop a responsive and collaborative structure yet still mark the distinctiveness of each of the areas and advance their missions.\u201d <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In addition to undergraduate majors and minors in each of the four areas, these units serve the undergraduate population across all majors via large general education courses that give students the tools to engage in dialogues about the value of a diverse and just society, the unit leaders say in their proposal. The new department aims to strengthen UConn\u2019s mission to help students become informed, ethical, and invested citizens.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The department is also expected to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">generate <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">academic efficiencies and to increase the recruitment and retention of historically excluded and marginalized students, faculty, and staff, according to the letter of recommendation issued by Provost Anne D\u2019Alleva to the Board<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of Trustees<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Specifically, the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">new <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">department <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">will provide more efficient administrative and curricular processes in areas such as course scheduling and improve sustainability in leadership, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">as well as enable greater <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">collaboration across the four areas of research, teaching, service, and community engagement, D\u2019Alleva says.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The department will leverage the collective expertise and ethical commitments of its faculty to produce ground-breaking interdisciplinary research and scholarship but also more sustainable, equitable, and just ways of life.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In recent years, faculty and students from these units have worked on reforms at the State level in response to statutes supporting the development of K-12 teaching and curricula in areas such as Asian American and Pacific Islander studies and Indigenous and Native American studies. Faculty in the department will be well-positioned to continue these efforts to support State agencies in future decision-making, say the leaders. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The department will officially\u00a0become an administrative unit on July 1, 2024.
