Trained as a medical anthropologist, his work explores topics such as the impacts of capitalism, the right to health, communities of care, and collective healings of colonial wounds. In 2022, Abad\u00eda-Barrero received a Fulbright Fellowship award to support his project &#8220;Understanding peace building through Buen Vivir in Caquet\u00e1, Colombia.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What does it mean to heal? Medical anthropologists and clinicians typically understand healing as a process that takes place within an individual body, a process that is negotiated between a patient and a medical practitioner. C\u00e9sar Abad\u00eda-Barrero\u2019s work challenges traditional notions of healing, wellbeing, and peace by employing indigenous epistemologies such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Buen Vivir<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Translated to mean \u201cgood living,\u201d \u201cgood life,\u201d or \u201cliving beautifully,\u201d <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Buen Vivir <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is an indigenous concept or framework for understanding the health and well-being of individuals, communities, and the environment. Found predominantly in the Andean region of South America,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Buen Vivir,<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Abad\u00eda-Barrero<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> describes, is \u201ca way of life that prioritizes interconnectedness among humans, non-humans, and the rest of the natural world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Through a range of initiatives and projects in Caquet\u00e1, Colombia, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Abad\u00eda-Barrero intends to establish a holistic measure of community well-being.
