{"id":210855,"date":"2024-03-11T15:38:45","date_gmt":"2024-03-11T19:38:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=210855"},"modified":"2024-03-13T15:39:48","modified_gmt":"2024-03-13T19:39:48","slug":"two-faculty-entrepreneurs-named-to-national-academy-of-inventors-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2024\/03\/two-faculty-entrepreneurs-named-to-national-academy-of-inventors-list\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Faculty Entrepreneurs Named to National Academy of Inventors List"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two UConn professors ventured on an unfamiliar journey that took them from the depths of their science labs to the complexities of technology entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, they learned their perseverance paid off: <a href=\"https:\/\/bahal.lab.uconn.edu\/\">Raman Bahal<\/a>, Pharmaceutical Sciences associate Professor, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nguyenresearchgroup.com\/members\">Thanh D. The 2024 class is the largest to date and includes 60 member institutions across the nation.<\/p>\n<p>Bahal hopes his work inspires fellow UConn scientists to relentlessly innovate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis award was a big honor and a good motivation to keep pursuing our research goals,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Bahal\u2019s current work and patents focus on targeted drug delivery of RNA inhibitors in the kidneys and other organs. He\u2019s exploring the possibility of targeted drug delivery at the interface of disease biology and bioconjugate chemistry. Bahal holds 12 provisional U.S. patents and three issued patents &#8211; and was a <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2022\/06\/ovpr-announces-spark-technology-commercialization-fund-recipients-for-2022-23\/\">2022-23 SPARK Technology Commercialization Fund Program<\/a> recipient, which helped him generate key preclinical data he\u2019s now presenting to prospective investors.<\/p>\n<p>It was the unwavering support from <a href=\"https:\/\/innovation.uconn.edu\/\">UConn\u2019s Technology Commercialization (TCS) department<\/a> that ultimately helped Bahal take his research to the next level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an excellent experience to learn how therapeutic can get commercialized from bench to bedside,\u201d he says. \u201cFrom filing invention disclosures to meeting with investors and explaining the innovation about the technologies we developed in a lab. We will be very happy if we can make an impact on patients&#8217; lives. (Sean Flynn\/UConn Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In his lab, he\u2019s nearly perfected an invention that focuses on a novel biomaterial that can dissolve without harm into the body, creating a painless injection free skin patch that wouldn\u2019t require boosters. He\u2019s also inventing a biodegradable skin cartilage application that has the potential to regrow damaged cartilage inside an arthritic joint. The first invention may be someday implanted into humans and animals without surgery, revolutionizing the way our country vaccinates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur company is now working with a livestock vaccine company and big pharma. We have the potential to make a big impact here,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Although Nguyen\u2019s job is technically professor, he has long aspired to break out of the lab.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is why I founded two startups,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Nguyen believes the ecosystem at UConn is \u201cwonderful.\u201d The business and technical guidance he received from <a href=\"https:\/\/innovation.uconn.edu\/\">TCS<\/a> equipped him with tools he needed to market his technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCommercializing tech and research is a way to really benefit UConn. Not only does the school make money, but the ultimate goal of research is to help people and to improve quality of life,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Nguyen hopes his success serves as motivation for his students to join him in venturing outside of their labs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy patents have my students\u2019 name on them as well,\u201d he says proudly. \u201cThey&#8217;re inventors, too. If my students are not experimenting, if they don&#8217;t try to modify, I teach them that their idea will never take off. We all brainstorm and discuss &#8211; how can this be more perfect? How can it help more people improve their quality of life?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Bahal and Nguyen will be honored with the 2024 class of Senior Members at NAI\u2019s Annual Conference taking place June 16-18th, 2024 in Raleigh, North Carolina.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8216;We all brainstorm and discuss &#8211; how can this be more perfect?
