The One Health Conference seeks to create networks by expanding and strengthening collaborations between professionals in the human, animal, and environmental health fields to nurture and improve the health and well-being of all species.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/onehealth\/index.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-209097 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/cahnr_10th_blue-green-300x139.png\" alt=\"CAHNR 10th Anniversary of Health badge\" width=\"180\" height=\"84\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 180px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 180\/84;\" \/>One Health<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> is a framework advocated for by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The approach acknowledges the interconnection between humans, animals, plants, and their shared environment to work towards optimal health outcomes. The One Health approach is being used to better understand and tackle critical health issues, including climate change, zoonotic diseases, food safety and security, water resource management, and sustainable agriculture.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cAs a concept, One Health is critical for the continued health and well-being of our society at the local, national, and global scale,\u201d says CAHNR Dean Indrajeet Chaubey. \u201cIt is also a major component of UConn and CAHNR&#8217;s strategic vision to ensure healthy people through a healthy planet, which is why this conference helps move the needle for our students, faculty, staff, and the community.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Guided by the principles of One Health, UConn aims to train the next generation of educators and an environmentally conscious public to address health issues and complex problems.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWe wanted to bring the UConn community together as One Health spans many disciplines and requires working together on strategies and solutions to increasingly urgent problems,\u201d says Stacey Stearns, program specialist in UConn Extension. Stearns is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cahnr.uconn.edu\/strategic-vision\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">CAHNR\u2019s Strategic Vision<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Implementation Coordinator and the co-chair of the committee that organized the event.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The day-long conference will begin with opening remarks from Chaubey and Connecticut Department of Agriculture Commissioner Bryan Hurlburt, followed by keynote speakers, thematic speakers, and working sessions focused on various aspects of One Health.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The first keynote speaker is Dr. Osman Dar, a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Edinburgh) and a fellow of the Faculty of Public Health (UK). He is the director of the One Health Project, part of the Global Health Programme, at Chatham House, an international policy institute seeking to build a sustainably secure, prosperous, and just world.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dar also serves as a consultant physician in global health at the UK Health Security Agency and is a working co-chair for the One Health High-Level Expert Panel, which advises the World Health Organization, World Organization for Animal Health, Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations, and the United Nations Environment Programme.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Leann Andrews, an assistant professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture at Penn State, is the conference\u2019s second keynote speaker. She is affiliated with the Ecology plus Design (E+D) initiative at Penn State, which engages in planning, designing, restoring, and assessing ecologically productive landscapes, and she is a member of the Penn State One Health Group. Her research and design projects have focused on assessing impacts of landscape interventions on human and ecological health in vulnerable communities in the United States and Peru.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The closing keynote speaker will be Douglas Casa, UConn Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor of Kinesiology and CEO of the Korey Stringer Institute (KSI). Through KSI and his role in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kins.uconn.edu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Department of Kinesiology<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, Casa is dedicated to research, education, advocacy, and consultation to maximize performance, optimize safety, and prevent sudden death for athletes, soldiers, and laborers.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Between these keynote speakers are thematic speakers and working sessions led by CAHNR faculty on different topic areas. \u201cA Framework for Equity from Global to Local\u201d will be presented by Elaine Lee, associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology. Lee is also CAHNR\u2019s Leadership Fellow and co-chair of the One Health Conference. \u201cThe Human-Animal-Environment Interface\u201d is hosted by Elsio Wunder, assistant professor in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pathobiology.cahnr.uconn.edu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Department of Pathobiology and Veterinary Science<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. The final session \u201cA Changing Ecosystem\u201d will feature David Dickson, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cahnr.uconn.edu\/extension\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">UConn Extension<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> educator, and director of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/clear.uconn.edu\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">UConn Center for Land Use Education and Research<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The One Health Conference will be held on Monday, April 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom. The event is free and open to UConn students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Registration is required.
