{"id":211549,"date":"2024-03-25T09:32:10","date_gmt":"2024-03-25T13:32:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=211549"},"modified":"2024-03-25T09:32:10","modified_gmt":"2024-03-25T13:32:10","slug":"national-honor-for-uconn-healths-dr-mario-fahed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2024\/03\/national-honor-for-uconn-healths-dr-mario-fahed\/","title":{"rendered":"National Honor for UConn Health\u2019s Dr. Mario Fahed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/facultydirectory.uchc.edu\/profile?profileId=Fahed-Mario\">Dr. Mario Fahed<\/a>, geriatric psychiatrist in the <a href=\"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/aging\/\">UConn Center on Aging<\/a>, is the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry\u2019s (AAGP) 2024 Educator of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>The AAGP presented Fahed with the award, which recognizes demonstrated excellence in the field of geriatric psychiatry education, at its annual meeting in Atlanta March 15.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Fahed displays excellence in education across multiple categories for which this award is given, including leadership, teaching, mentoring, curricular development, faculty development, and educational publication,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/facultydirectory.uchc.edu\/profile?profileId=Zdanys-Kristina\">Dr. Kristina Zdanys<\/a>, fellow UConn Health geriatric psychiatrist. \u201cOn a personal note, I would like to add that Dr. Fahed is an inspiring colleague who brings out the best in our faculty and motivates us all to continue life-long learning. He constantly drives me and our other Geriatric Psychiatry Division members to push ourselves out of our comfort zones in the classroom, embrace new learning models, pay attention to our personal biases, and first and foremost unabashedly share our passion for geriatric psychiatry with trainees at all levels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zdanys and <a href=\"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/psychiatry\/about-us\/\">Dr. David Steffens<\/a>, UConn Health psychiatry chair, nominated Fahed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Fahed is the model clinician educator,\u201d Steffens says. \u201cHere at UConn, he has received several teaching awards from our residents as well as the Gold Humanism Honor Society Award. Beyond his teaching awards, Dr. Fahed has served as Psychiatry Clerkship Director. He has also spearheaded development of a new curriculum for psychiatry residents, geriatric psychiatry fellows, and geriatric medicine fellow on \u2018Neuroimaging in Cognitive Disorders.\u2019 Working with colleagues at Yale, Dr. Fahed used a \u2018flipped classroom approach\u2019 to engage trainees. (Photo by Tina Encarnacion)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Fahed is an associate professor of psychiatry and faculty co-director of medical student affairs in the <a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.uconn.edu\/\">UConn School of Medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReceiving the AAGP 2024 Educator of the Year award is an honor that deeply humbles me as an international medical graduate who\u2019s had the opportunity to grow into an academic geriatric psychiatrist,\u201d Fahed says. \u201cThis recognition is not just a personal milestone; it symbolizes the collective effort and dedication of many who have journeyed with me \u2014 mentors, family, colleagues, residents, students, patients, and their families.
