{"id":211943,"date":"2024-04-03T14:11:16","date_gmt":"2024-04-03T18:11:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=211943"},"modified":"2024-04-03T14:11:16","modified_gmt":"2024-04-03T18:11:16","slug":"uconns-engineers-without-borders-hosts-northeast-regional-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2024\/04\/uconns-engineers-without-borders-hosts-northeast-regional-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"UConn\u2019s Engineers Without Borders Hosts Northeast Regional Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">During the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.ewb-usa.org\/event\/engineers-without-borders-2024-northeast-regional-conference\/e554724\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Engineers Without Borders 2024 Northeast Regional Conference<\/a> on March 24, more than 100 engineering students, professionals, and faculty advisors from across the northeast gathered on UConn\u2019s campus to celebrate and share their recent projects while attending technical sessions, interactive workshops, hands-on training, and professional development sessions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Engineers Without Borders USA (EWB-USA) is a nonprofit humanitarian organization that supports community-driven development programs worldwide through partnerships that design and implement sustainable engineering projects. Nationwide, 155 colleges and universities have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewb-usa.org\/find-a-chapter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EWB chapters<\/a>, of which 42 are in the Northeast region.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_211951\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-211951\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-211951 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/EWB-5-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"People gathered around a table during the EWB conference \" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/EWB-5-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/EWB-5-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/EWB-5-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/EWB-5-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/EWB-5-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/EWB-5-420x420.jpg 420w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/EWB-5-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/EWB-5-275x275.jpg 275w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/EWB-5-665x665.jpg 665w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/EWB-5.jpg 1834w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 400px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 400\/400;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-211951\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Engineers Without Borders conference was held at the Innovation Partnership Building (IPB) on UConn&#8217;s campus.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cUConn\u2019s EWB Chapter was delighted to host the 2024 conference and learn about how other chapters are contributing their knowledge and skills to help communities around the world,\u201d says EWB-UConn faculty advisor Davis Chac\u00f3n-Hurtado, assistant research professor in the Department\u202fof\u202fCivil and Environmental Engineering and Gladstein Family Human Rights Institute. \u201cThe conference provided an ideal opportunity to network and bring our ideas together while offering the undergraduates several skill-building sessions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Held at the Innovation Partnership Building (IPB), the conference provided sessions on career development, resume writing, public speaking, fundraising, documentary filmmaking, and trip planning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Special guests included hydrogeologist Nadia Glucksberg and geologist-environmental scientist<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Helena Hollauer who presented a talk on \u201cFinding Water: How and Where to Set the Well.\u201d Both speakers are active with Engineers Without Borders. Glucksberg has made more than a dozen trips to developing communities where she\u2019s worked to provide potable water or infrastructure to support public health.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition, EWB partner organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewb-usa.org\/programs\/community-engineering-corps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Community Engineering Corps<\/a> set up an information booth. The volunteer-led group works with communities across the U.S. that are unable to easily retain or afford traditional engineering services.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Conference attendees also shared their recent projects during a day-long poster session. While EWB-UConn did not compete, Worchester Polytechnic Institute (Massachusetts), Northeastern University (Massachusetts) and Stevens Institute of Technology (New Jersey) took the first, second, and third place awards for their presentations. Gabriella Frey \u201915 (ENG), senior scientist at Unilever, along with Josue Martinez and Uma Lakshman from EWB-NY led the organization of the 2024 conference. Frey served as a member of EWB-UConn for four years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe conference went wonderfully,\u201d says EWB-UConn president and mechanical engineering major Brian Machado \u201925 (ENG). \u201cWe had a very good turnout, and everyone seemed to have a great time meeting members of other chapters and professionals.
