<\/p>\nUConn Faculty Member William Mustain Receives Prestigious Fulbright Award\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Professor William Mustain, a faculty member in the Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Connecticut has received a Fulbright Scholar Award to enable him to advance his research at the University of Surrey in the UK. The Fulbright Award is one of the most prestigious and selective scholarship programmes operating world-wide.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As a participant, Prof. Mustain has been selected from a strong applicant pool to investigate the use of electrochemical systems to reduce carbon dioxide emission from power plants. He will work with Professor John Varcoe, a world-leading expert in anion exchange membrane electrochemical systems, to develop new strategies and systems for carbon capture that significantly reduce energy demand and cost. The hope is that their collaboration will allow clean fossil-fuel energy technologies to finally be realized.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Commenting on receiving the award, Prof. Mustain said: \u201cI am very happy to have received this award. Having the opportunity to work in close collaboration with Prof. Varcoe will significantly advance our research. The Fulbright program provides a very important platform that is needed for international collaborations to move forward, especially in today\u2019s harsh funding climate. As a Fulbright scholar, I am also very excited at the opportunity to share our work throughout the UK and to experience the rich history and diverse culture there.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The US-UK Fulbright Commission is the only bi-lateral, transatlantic scholarship programme, offering awards for study or research in any field, at any accredited US or UK university. The Commission is part of the Fulbright programme conceived by Senator J William Fulbright in the aftermath of World War II to promote leadership, learning and empathy between nations through educational exchange. Award recipients and summer programme participants will be the future leaders for tomorrow and support the \u201cspecial relationship\u201d between the US and UK.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Commission selects scholars through a rigorous application and interview process. In making these awards the Commission looks not only for academic excellence but a focused application, a range of extracurricular and community activities, demonstrated ambassadorial skills, a desire to further the Fulbright Programme and a plan to give back to the recipient\u2019s home country upon returning.\u00a0<\/p>\n
