So, he jumped at any opportunity to meet new people and talk about math.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWe have a number theory seminar and when we go to lunch with the speaker, I almost invariably eat a Cobb salad,\u201d Lozano-Robledo says. \u201cSomething I really enjoy is the social aspect of mathematics &#8212; meeting the people that are actually doing mathematics.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Those interactions came to a halt during the pandemic, impacting Lozano-Robledo&#8217;s mental health.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cI struggled during the pandemic,\u201d Lozano-Robledo says. \u201cMy mental health was not great. I had a little bit of depression, and the isolation did not do well with me. So, I wanted to find ways to find that sense of community.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Noticing a lack of advanced math content creators, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Lozano-Robledo decided to take to TikTok in January 2021 to share his passion for math. More than three years later, he has amassed over 100,000 followers while working to destigmatize the subject<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and increase exposure for his program.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A fun place during an isolated time\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Lozano-Robledo began making videos after coming across a TikTok on another platform.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI had already been lurking on TikTok but did not have an account,\u201d he says.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He made an account to respond to a video with what he calls a \u201creally silly\u201d duet and realized he enjoyed making videos. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">It was only fitting that Lozano-Robledo made his <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">username \u201cMathandCobb.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">By that point, he realized he could play into social media trends to help people get more comfortable with math. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI think it matters just to combat math phobia,\u201d <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Lozano-Robledo<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> says. \u201cOne way to do that is to show people that there are people that love math.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He says he wanted to do the same thing he does with his own two kids: have open conversations about math and show that the subject is not something students need to be afraid of.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lozano-Robledo uses trends to get math content in front of a general audience.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI started by finding trends and sounds that were trending and converting them into a math TikTok,\u201d he says.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He joked that he would use lighthearted trending content to help get people&#8217;s attention but realized that people would then get curious and begin asking good questions.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI knew that if I posted about [a particular topic], somebody would ask this type of question that I was after and then I would reply to that with a longer video explaining some of the math behind it,\u201d Lozano-Robledo says. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some of his videos try to get people to think about math theories, including asking if people think <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@mathandcobb\/video\/7374144301674302766\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">15.99 divided by 3.99 would be less than, equal to, or greater than 4<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. After people begin discussing their answers, in the comments, he then <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@mathandcobb\/video\/7374423262270426410\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">posts a second video<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, explaining ways to solve the problem.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI think it matters just to combat math phobia,\u201d <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Lozano-Robledo<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> says. \u201cOne way to do that is to show people that there are people that love math.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Videos contribute to growing interest in the subject\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Overall, he thinks his videos help people think about math with a more open mind<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cPeople have written directly to me to tell me that they have chosen to do a math degree because of my videos,\u201d he says. \u201cIt is surprising, but it sort of tipped the scale towards math because of what they have seen.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">His videos have also contributed to increased exposure for the Department of Mathematics\u2019 graduate programs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Vasileios Chousionis, an associate professor of mathematics<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and the department&#8217;s director of graduate studies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> said the department has had a record number of 220 applications this year. Around 46% of applicants are interested in Lozano-Robledo research area of number theory.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Chousionis said many applicants mention Lozano-Robledo&#8217;s TikTok videos and associate professor of mathematics Keith Conrad\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kconrad.math.uconn.edu\/blurbs\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">expository papers<\/span><\/a> <span data-contrast=\"none\">in their applications.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lozano-Robledo says being on TikTok has helped him become a better teacher and lecturer.
