{"id":215814,"date":"2024-07-09T07:35:03","date_gmt":"2024-07-09T11:35:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=215814"},"modified":"2024-07-10T07:54:56","modified_gmt":"2024-07-10T11:54:56","slug":"stamford-alumni-earn-accolades-as-uconns-film-program-continues-to-grow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2024\/07\/stamford-alumni-earn-accolades-as-uconns-film-program-continues-to-grow\/","title":{"rendered":"Stamford Alumni Earn Accolades as UConn\u2019s Film Program Continues to Grow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When the undergraduate seniors studying in UConn Stamford\u2019s digital film and video production concentration start preparing for their capstone projects, their professor advises them to go personal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen they pitch me an idea, and they say, \u2018Oh, I want to do the next Marvel movie,\u2019 I&#8217;m like, man, you have no budget,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/dmd.uconn.edu\/person\/oscar-guerra\/\">Oscar Guerra<\/a>, an Emmy-award winning documentary filmmaker and associate professor of film and video production.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut use the capital you have. And the capital you have is telling your own story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a challenge to share your own story \u2013 it means you have to be vulnerable. And you\u2019ll undoubtedly be critiqued \u2013 by your professor, by your peers, by your audiences \u2013 along the way, something made all the more difficult by that oh-so-personal investment in the story.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s also an opportunity, says Guerra, for a young filmmaker to write their own narrative.<\/p>\n<p>And to learn a valuable lesson about trust \u2013 trust in your mentors; trust in those working alongside you; and trust that, when you tell a great story, it will resonate.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pbs-viral-player-wrapper\" style=\"position: relative; padding-top: calc(56.25% + 43px);\"><iframe style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/player.pbs.org\/viralplayer\/3086462405\/\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>A group of young filmmakers at UConn Stamford embraced that challenge in their senior year, offering their own personal stories through a budding partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctpublic.org\/\">Connecticut Public<\/a> that\u2019s brought their work to an entirely new audience.<\/p>\n<p>And they\u2019ve racked up accolades for their efforts, most recently at the <a href=\"https:\/\/newenglandemmy.org\/\">47th Boston\/New England Emmy\u00ae Awards Gala<\/a> \u2013 not only notching wins for the hard-earned skill demonstrated through those personal projects, but also recognition for the young film program at the <a href=\"https:\/\/sfa.uconn.edu\/\">UConn School of Fine Arts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New and Growing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The University launched its digital film and video production concentration through the Digital Media and Design program in 2019 with the addition of two new faculty, including Guerra.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s wild to me that there was no film major until then,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/dmd.uconn.edu\/person\/heather-elliott-famularo\/\">Heather Elliott-Famularo<\/a>, an award-winning filmmaker and head of the <a href=\"https:\/\/dmd.uconn.edu\/\">Digital Media and Design<\/a> department, or DMD, at UConn Stamford and UConn Storrs. \u201cAt a Research 1, flagship university, it&#8217;s kind of was crazy that there wasn&#8217;t even a film production option at UConn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, students in both Storrs and Stamford can choose a concentration in film as they pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts, or BFA.<\/p>\n<p>Just five years into the program, the film concentration has become one of the most popular DMD offerings in Storrs, says Elliott-Famularo, where the program is currently home to about 50 undergraduate film students.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s at UConn Stamford \u2013 with its close proximity to New York, with a blossoming industry in the city of Stamford itself, and where UConn\u2019s program will soon be expanding to offer narrative as well as documentary production \u2013 that the program\u2019s growth has really been on display.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pbs-viral-player-wrapper\" style=\"position: relative; padding-top: calc(56.25% + 43px);\"><iframe style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/player.pbs.org\/viralplayer\/3086462821\/\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s real grassroots efforts to build the film industry within the state of Connecticut,\u201d says Elliott-Famularo. \u201cThat we can have a key role, as the flagship university, is really exciting for us, for the students, and for the industry \u2013 it&#8217;s a real way that we can give back to the creative economy of the state in helping to prepare these students for their careers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The film program in Stamford offers a more intimate experience \u2013 the classes are smaller, and students work even more closely with their professors.<\/p>\n<p>They also work closely with each other, which is by design.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFilm is, inherently, a very collaborative process,\u201d says Elliott-Famularo. \u201cYou have a crew. You have a cast. Occasionally we make films as one person. We&#8217;ve all done it. But I just know that I thrive with Stamford.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thriving in Stamford<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Aranda and her classmates in the first film production cohort at UConn Stamford started in the brand-new program right as UConn students in every school and major were about to feel the impact of the global pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was wild, because we basically worked all the theory portion online,\u201d says Guerra. \u201cThat was one of the biggest challenges when we went online for the production classes \u2013 it was very challenging to do high-end production.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Physical distance during the start of the program, however, didn\u2019t stop the cohort from connecting.<\/p>\n<p>Rather, the classmates formed some uniquely tight bonds, each leaning into their own strengths and skills as they collaborated on their own individual projects as well as their group ideas.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pbs-viral-player-wrapper\" style=\"position: relative; padding-top: calc(56.25% + 43px);\"><iframe style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/player.pbs.org\/viralplayer\/3086462715\/\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe part that I love the best was working on stuff together,\u201d says Christopher Orrico \u201923 (SFA), a member of the inaugural cohort. \u201cBecause when you&#8217;re working on your individual project, and you&#8217;re doing everything yourself, it can get a little stressful, and obviously it takes a lot more time. But when you&#8217;re working together with such a talented group of people, then it&#8217;s a lot easier to get stuff done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What they got done was a series of short productions in which each member of the cohort \u2013 Aranda, Orrico, Jayvell Gray \u201923 (SFA), Shannon Nasution \u201923 (SFA), and Yazmine Uvidia \u201923 (SFA) \u2013 contributed and collaborated toward the ultimate end-goal of creating high-end documentary films.<\/p>\n<p>Their work also was the first slated to be distributed through a new collaboration between UConn\u2019s DMD program and Connecticut Public called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/show\/uconn-reels\/\">UConn Reels<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPBS Connecticut was really committed to finding ways to work with us,\u201d says Guerra, who\u2019s produced <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2021\/09\/uconn-stamford-professor-human-rights-filmmaker-earns-two-emmy-nominations\/\">multiple<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2022\/12\/emmy-award-winning-uconn-professor-takes-on-zero-tolerance-family-separation-with-second-pbs-frontline-documentary\/\">documentaries<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/show\/frontline\/\">PBS Frontline<\/a> and who worked to start discussions with the network to find ways to collaborate. \u201cThey really liked the idea, because it&#8217;s not just that they want content, they want good content. So, it was just a matter of everyone getting connected to see the type of work that we&#8217;re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"pbs-viral-player-wrapper\" style=\"position: relative; padding-top: calc(56.25% + 43px);\"><iframe style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/player.pbs.org\/viralplayer\/3086461797\/\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The cohort ultimately produced five short documentaries that published online and aired on the broadcast channels through UConn Reels \u2013 largely Connecticut-centric stories, ranging from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/video\/similar-kind-right-here-right-now-by-shannon-nasution-tfkfce\/\">a profile of the local indie-pop band Similar Kind<\/a>; to an examination of the once-thriving, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/video\/public-hazard-ftdpkg\/\">now-waning skateboard culture in Bridgeport<\/a>; to a glimpse into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/video\/made-in-bridgeport-by-agustina-aranda-fzz7xn\/\">innovative Bridgeport fashion scene pioneered by Black and brown designers, models, and promoters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_216038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-216038\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-216038 size-medium img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Stamford-Film_2-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Behind the scenes for the filming of &quot;Public Hazard,&quot; a short film produced by students at UConn Stamford that examines the once-thriving, now-waning skateboard culture in Bridgeport. (Contributed Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For each project, the students used their relationships with each other to develop concepts, film, edit, refine, and ultimately distribute their collaborative work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/video\/made-in-bridgeport-by-agustina-aranda-fzz7xn\/\">Made In Bridgeport<\/a>,\u2019 specifically, it was a group project,\u201d says Orrico. \u201cAgustina directed. I filmed the entire thing \u2013 that&#8217;s kind of usually what I do. I film most of the projects. I&#8217;m the cam person and the technical person, and Jayvell edited. We all had our roles, and sometimes we collaborated even more. Hey, what do you think of this? What can we do better? What could we change? It was a great group effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But they also shared those personal stories \u2013 the ones where they had to be vulnerable and allow themselves to be present in the work.<\/p>\n<p>For Aranda and Orrico, those came through vastly different portraits of their fathers. Aranda\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/video\/say-something-by-agustina-aranda-gejkk5\/\">Say Something<\/a>\u201d offers an intensely intimate look at the de-evolution of a father-daughter relationship portrayed through interview, archival footage, and animation.<\/p>\n<p>For Orrico, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/video\/the-ladder-by-christopher-orrico-3agqx8\/\">The Ladder<\/a>\u201d explains the events that helped shape his own father\u2019s life and shares the lessons of that life that are now passed onto new generations within their family.<\/p>\n<p>For each of them, their willingness to share such personal aspects of their lives was made easier by the relationships they\u2019d developed with their teachers and classmates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think being vulnerable came kind of easy,\u201d Aranda says, \u201cbecause I knew these guys for my entire college career, and I knew the guidance they\u2019d given me and would give me, if I wanted to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re friends at this point,\u201d says Orrico. \u201cWe had built this relationship, and we knew what each of us was good at. In terms of Agustina and myself, she was like, I&#8217;ll direct something and you film it. And I\u2019m there for it. I know my strengths. I know her strengths. And it&#8217;s just really important to trust.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pbs-viral-player-wrapper\" style=\"position: relative; padding-top: calc(56.25% + 43px);\"><iframe style=\"position: absolute; top: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/player.pbs.org\/viralplayer\/3086462183\/\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>\u201cSometimes, working with other people, it can make or break something. So, trust was very much the biggest thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Accomplishment and Acclaim<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Aranda, Orrico, and their classmates all graduated from UConn in 2023, and they were no longer students when their films first appeared through UConn Reels. (Contributed Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe way that these particular students who are featured through UConn Reels were able to work together and work collaboratively on realizing these films is a real testament to the kind of community we create within the department,\u201d says Elliott-Famularo, \u201cand to some of the special uniqueness of the Stamford campus, in particular.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the Boston\/New England Emmy\u00ae Awards Gala, held in Boston on June 8, Aranda won two Pillar Awards, the equivalent of a student regional Emmy\u00ae, taking the College\/University \u2013 Video Essay category for \u201cSay Something\u201d and the College\/University \u2013 Arts\/Entertainment\/Cultural Affairs category for \u201cMade In Bridgeport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Orrico was also recognized with an Honorable Mention in the College\/University \u2013 Video Essay category for \u201cThe Ladder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Aranda also won Best Documentary 2022 at the Bridgeport Film Festival for \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/video\/public-hazard-ftdpkg\/\">Public Hazard<\/a>\u201d and the Student Documentary Award of Excellence at the BEA Festival of Media Arts 2024 for \u201cMade In Bridgeport,\u201d and she premiered \u201cSay Something\u201d at the <a href=\"https:\/\/slamdance.com\/\">Slamdance 2024<\/a> film festival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s always cool to accomplish something, and feel proud of something, and move forward with your work when you&#8217;re so young, because it feels like you&#8217;re on the right track,\u201d says Aranda. \u201cAs a student, I think it&#8217;s just an extra layer of accomplishment. I did it, and I&#8217;m just a student. Imagine what I could do when I&#8217;ve done it for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was also, Aranda says, an acknowledgement of her identity \u2013 something critically important to her and deeply apparent in all of her work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a Paraguayan American multimedia artist and filmmaker from Bridgeport, Connecticut,\u201d she says. \u201cAll these layers, that&#8217;s all me, and every single layer comes into every moment of my work. That could be good or bad, because it&#8217;s the way I navigate the world and a way that other people don&#8217;t navigate the world.
