{"id":215868,"date":"2024-07-02T09:08:38","date_gmt":"2024-07-02T13:08:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=215868"},"modified":"2025-09-29T11:09:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-29T15:09:08","slug":"students-shine-at-hispanic-dental-association-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2024\/07\/students-shine-at-hispanic-dental-association-meeting\/","title":{"rendered":"Students Shine at Hispanic Dental Association Meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Students in the School of Dental Medicine\u2019s chapter of the Student National Dental Association\/ Hispanic Student Dental Association (SNDA\/HSDA) recently participated in the 2024 Hispanic Dental Association (HDA) Annual Meeting and Conference in New York. At the meeting, students won awards and scholarships, presented research, and participated in a social media challenge hosted by the HDA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Hispanic Dental Association has several programs to help support students throughout their dental education and advance their mission of providing service, education\/research, advocacy and leadership as they promote overall health of the Hispanic\/LatinX and underrepresented communities, &#8221; said faculty advisor and associate dean for students Dr. Sarita Arteaga. &#8220;Some of these include scholarships provided through the H.D.A. Nuestros Ni\u00f1os, a program hosted by <span id=\"page47R_mcid0\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Colgate and the HDA<\/span><\/span><span id=\"page47R_mcid2\" class=\"markedContent\">, addresses oral health care issues for Hispanic children less than 18 years of age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis case underscored the importance of patient-centered care, cultural competence, and the importance of access to the operating room for dentists,\u201d said Desirae.<\/p>\n<p>Princess Stark, second-year student and co-president of the SNDA\/HSDA, won third place for her research titled <em>Mechanisms in TMJ Health and Osteoarthritis Pathogenesis<\/em>, which studied Manibular Condylar Cartilage degeneration and the treatment of osteoarthritis of the temporomandibular joint\u2014the most common cause of chronic pain of nondental origin in the orofacial area.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_215875\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-215875\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-215875 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/HDA4.jpg\" alt=\"student with award standing next to faculty\" width=\"370\" height=\"493\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/HDA4.jpg 1816w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/HDA4-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/HDA4-768x1023.jpg 768w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/HDA4-1153x1536.jpg 1153w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/HDA4-1537x2048.jpg 1537w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/HDA4-315x420.jpg 315w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/HDA4-499x665.jpg 499w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 370px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 370\/493;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-215875\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Princess Stark receives an award for her research on osteoarthritis of the temporomandibular joint during the meeting&#8217;s scientific poster competition.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Luis Romero, second-year student and secretary of the SNDA\/HSDA, won a scholarship sponsored by Crest and Oral-B that aims to support Hispanic and Latino students during their academic training.<\/p>\n<p>Students also participated in the EPIC Challenge, which was created by the HDA to help address the need for both student and professional chapters to raise oral health awareness in their respective communities. For six months, students in the UConn chapter of the SNDA\/HSDA used their Instagram page to post at least three monthly educational posts\u2014with at least one a month being in Spanish\u2014to encourage the local community to learn and better utilize dental services. The posts included videos, illustrations, and animations.
