{"id":216310,"date":"2024-07-17T16:28:26","date_gmt":"2024-07-17T20:28:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=216310"},"modified":"2024-07-17T16:46:47","modified_gmt":"2024-07-17T20:46:47","slug":"white-house-taps-expertise-of-professor-plesko-and-two-uconn-alumnae","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2024\/07\/white-house-taps-expertise-of-professor-plesko-and-two-uconn-alumnae\/","title":{"rendered":"White House Taps Expertise of Professor Plesko and Two UConn Alumnae"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Accounting Professor <strong>George Plesko<\/strong> along with two UConn Ph.D. graduates, now professors in their own right, traveled to Washington, D.C. last month to present the results of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/380772035_The_Demographics_of_the_CAMT_Insights_from_Tax_Return_Data\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">highly regarded corporate tax research<\/a> to the <strong>White House Council of Economic Advisors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Plesko, who has served on IRS advisory panels for more than 30 years, has regularly participated in policy discussions with Congressional and Treasury\u00a0experts.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_216312\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-216312\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-216312 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/plesko-200x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 200px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 200\/300;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-216312\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">George Plesko, Professor of Accounting and Department Head (Nathan Oldham \/ UConn School of Business)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But this presentation was particularly memorable because it was conducted jointly with UConn accounting alumnae <strong>Danielle Higgins Green<\/strong> \u201913 Ph.D., a professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and <strong>Erin Henry<\/strong> \u201914 Ph.D. professor at the University of Arkansas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is always a pleasure to have your research recognized by people in policy design and analysis,\u2019\u2019 Plesko said. \u201cBut it was especially gratifying to share this experience with former students given the profile of the audience.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_216313\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-216313\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-216313 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/wh-ACCT.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 200px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 200\/300;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-216313\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Erin Henry \u201914 PhD, left, a professor at the University of Arkansas and Danielle Green &#8217;13, a professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The researchers, who also included <strong>Caitlin McGovern<\/strong> of the IRS, discussed the findings from their recent work, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.journals.uchicago.edu\/doi\/full\/10.1086\/730168\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Demographics of the CAMT: Insights from Tax Return Data<\/a>,\u2019\u2019 which was published in June in the <strong><em>National Tax<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>Journal. <\/em><\/strong>The lunchtime meeting took place in front of some 20 members of the Council and its staff at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, adjacent to the West Wing of the White House. The Council advises the president on economic issues, including tax policy.<\/p>\n<p>The study examined the potential effects of the Corporate Alternative Minimum Tax (CAMT) which was enacted in 2023. The law was designed to close tax loopholes that allow some corporations to significantly reduce their federal income tax liability. The government estimated that the law could affect 150 of the world\u2019s largest companies and add more than $220 billion to U.S. government coffers over 10 years.
