{"id":21638,"date":"2010-09-22T15:47:15","date_gmt":"2010-09-22T19:47:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=21638"},"modified":"2010-09-29T08:27:53","modified_gmt":"2010-09-29T12:27:53","slug":"dining-services-switching-to-paper-plates-cups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2010\/09\/dining-services-switching-to-paper-plates-cups\/","title":{"rendered":"Dining Services Switching to Paper Plates, Cups"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In an effort to conserve water in the face of ongoing drought conditions, the Department of Dining Services will begin using paper plates and cups and plastic silverware in all eight residential dining halls, beginning Monday, Sept. 27.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur dish machines, while water-efficient, still utilize large quantities of water,\u201d said Dennis Pierce, director of dining services, in an e-mail message to the Storrs campus. \u201cWe will minimize the use of water only to sanitize service-ware, and hope that our efforts and students\u2019 understanding will set an example to the University community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The University serves 180,000 meals a week.<\/p>\n<p>On Sept. 13, the University issued a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=21646\" target=\"_self\">Stage III Drought Advisory<\/a>\u201d notifying the campus of both voluntary and mandatory water conservation measures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile our water system is able to meet current and projected demands, operating the supply wells can add stress to the local rivers that are already affected by the drought,\u201d wrote Gene Roberts of UConn Facilities and Rich Miller, director of the University\u2019s Office of Environmental Policy, in a message to the University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe ask for and appreciate your continued support and cooperation,\u201d they added. \u201cBy reducing consumption during these dry weather conditions, you can help us protect local streams and the aquatic life they support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dining Services will continue to use disposable products until drought conditions end.
