{"id":216747,"date":"2024-08-12T07:30:58","date_gmt":"2024-08-12T11:30:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=216747"},"modified":"2024-08-05T20:25:34","modified_gmt":"2024-08-06T00:25:34","slug":"understanding-what-makes-ticks-tick-through-their-spit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2024\/08\/understanding-what-makes-ticks-tick-through-their-spit\/","title":{"rendered":"Understanding what Makes Ticks Tick Through Their Spit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ticks are common disease carriers for illnesses like Lyme, a condition that is seen all too frequently in Connecticut.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-209097 alignleft img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/cahnr_10th_blue-green-300x139.png\" alt=\"CAHNR 10th Anniversary of Health badge\" width=\"180\" height=\"84\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 180px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 180\/84;\" \/>Andrei Abarientos \u201826 (<a href=\"https:\/\/cahnr.uconn.edu\">CAHNR<\/a>), a <a href=\"https:\/\/pathobiology.cahnr.uconn.edu\/\">pathobiology and veterinary science<\/a> major, is interning this summer at Rocky Mountain Laboratories, a National Institutes of Health laboratory in Montana to learn about a unique aspect of these harmful insects.<\/p>\n<p>The lab focuses on understanding how ticks\u2019 salivary glands interact with host organisms to allow the tick to feed effectively and promote the spread of pathogens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a pretty dynamic interface between tick, host, and pathogen, and I think the way they\u2019re all interconnected is really interesting,\u201d says Abarientos. \u201cI wanted to explore a lot more of that vector biology on the insect side of things, so this lab ended up being a really good fit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rocky Mountain Laboratories is and has been at the forefront of tick research in the U.S. In fact, it was there that researchers discovered <em>Borrelia burgdorferi<\/em>, the pathogen responsible for Lyme Disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really kind of incredible to be able to do cutting-edge science, working with some of the best technology around,\u201d Abarientos says.<\/p>\n<p>This summer, Abarientos has been purifying and characterizing enzymes called kallikreins that are important for wound healing in humans. Certain proteins in tick saliva have been found to inhibit their activity.<\/p>\n<p>This means that when a tick latches on to feed from a human, the proteins in their saliva prevent normal wound healing, leaving the wound open allowing the tick to feed more effectively and for longer.
