In their <\/span>UConn Nursing <\/span>navy scrubs, students <\/span>gathe<\/span>red <\/span>together to celebrate entering the next chapter in their nursing education<\/span>. <\/span>In their<\/span> clinical rotations<\/span>,<\/span> students<\/span> will experience many milestones<\/span>,<\/span> from <\/span>holding their first infant to comforting <\/span>an<\/span> end-of-life patient<\/span> <\/span>\u2013<\/span><\/span> moments<\/span> they will<\/span> truly remember. Guided by the PRAXIS pledge, students will take their learning and apply it to real s<\/span>ettings<\/span>, where humanities are equally as important as biology and chemistry. They will also discover the meaning of caring for the well <\/span>and <\/span>the sick during this unprecedented time in health<\/span> care.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Class of 2026 heard from Dean Victoria Vaughan Dickson<\/span>,<\/span> Ph.D., RN, FAHA, FHFSA, FAAN<\/span>;<\/span> Dr. Jean Coffey<\/span>,<\/span> Ph.D., APRN, CPNP, FAAN<\/span>;<\/span> Dr. Elizabeth Mayerson<\/span>,<\/span> DNP, FNP-BC, CNE<\/span>;<\/span> Amanda Moreau<\/span>,<\/span> MSN, RN<\/span>;<\/span> and <\/span>Ria Karun \u2019<\/b><\/span>25<\/span> (NUR)<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span><\/span>The significance of this event is to commemorate the nursing student\u2019s entrance into the clinical <\/span>component<\/span> of their education.<\/span> This is a passage for nursing students to begin their journey into the clinical arena. It marks the time when students are applying the theoretical knowledge that they have learned the past two years to the clinical setting. This is just the beginning<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span><\/span> as you will continue to learn your entire career and apply evidence-based practice in real life clinical situations,\u201d states Dr. Coffey.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

After students’ names were called and celebrated individually, faculty and clinical staff administered lavender essential oils on their hands, symbolizing spirituality, purification, calmness, and higher consciousness. Students<\/span> took a <\/span>quiet <\/span>moment to<\/span> reflect<\/span> on why they made <\/span>the <\/span>decision to be<\/span>come a<\/span> nurse<\/span> while <\/span>participating<\/span> in the traditional <\/span>“<\/span>Blessing of the Hands”<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the conclusion of the ceremony, photos were taken with clinical <\/span>groups <\/span>on the steps of Storrs Hall. When asked what she is most excited for entering th<\/span>e next<\/span> phase<\/span> of <\/span>her<\/span> nursing journey<\/span>, Julia <\/span>Puprriqi<\/span> \u2019<\/b>26<\/span> (NUR)<\/span> responds, “getting to see real patients, speaking to people from different backgrounds, and being able to implement our learning outside of classes.” <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The words of Florence Nightingale rang true in the 1850s, and they still do now:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“Let us never consider ourselves finished nurses.<\/span> We must be learning all of our lives.”<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
