{"id":219913,"date":"2024-10-09T13:32:12","date_gmt":"2024-10-09T17:32:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=219913"},"modified":"2025-09-16T15:52:45","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T19:52:45","slug":"patagonias-ethics-expert-to-talk-about-building-trust-in-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2024\/10\/patagonias-ethics-expert-to-talk-about-building-trust-in-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Patagonia\u2019s Ethics Expert to Talk About Building Trust in Business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The School of Business\u2019 2024-25 <a href=\"https:\/\/businesslaw.business.uconn.edu\/equitynow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Equity Now Speaker Series<\/a> will kickoff this month with a presentation by Lauren Cleary, an ethics and compliance professional at Patagonia, the popular outdoor equipment and apparel brand.<\/p>\n<p>Cleary\u2019s presentation is titled \u201cBuilding Trust in Business: The Power of Privacy in Organizations,\u2019\u2019 and it will be livestreamed beginning at 6 p.m. on Oct. 21. To register for the event, please visit <a href=\"https:\/\/uconnvtc.webex.com\/weblink\/register\/r7b35511ce608d00d84ea011c167d1d1d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our registration page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe trust is the most valuable currency in business,\u2019\u2019 Cleary said. \u201cIf a company isn\u2019t doing what it says it is or is hiding things, that trust will erode, and that\u2019s really the beginning of the end.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Cleary is particularly invested in safeguarding the personal data of Patagonia\u2019s customers. She will share examples of how privacy challenges are handled in a large and highly regarded organization like Patagonia, which has staked its reputation on quality, sustainability, activism, and a staunch commitment to its values.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnderstanding the importance of privacy is critical throughout an organization and in every industry,\u2019\u2019 Cleary said. \u201cWhether your expertise is in marketing, legal, or another field, having a strong privacy policy to guide decisions is an invaluable and necessary asset.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>That privacy policy should be both intentional transparent and easy to understand, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I hope to impart to those in attendance is that they become inspired to serve as privacy advocates throughout their careers. Whether they are creating a new app or handling customer data, I hope they will always consider the impact of the decisions they make,\u2019\u2019 she said. \u201cI hope they see customer privacy not as a constraint or a burden, but as an opportunity to build stronger trust with their communities.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p><em>Cleary is the first of four speakers in Equity Now Speaker Series, which features expert insights on how law and policy can create diversity, equity and fairness in both organizations and society. The series is organized by UConn business law professor Robert Bird and is conducted in affiliation with the Academy of Legal Studies in Business, Virginia Tech, Indiana, Boston and Temple universities.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cI believe trust is the most valuable currency in business.
