She expressed surprise and gratitude for receiving the award, noting that it acknowledges her work in both advising students and addressing systemic issues in academic settings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Delaney completed her Ed.D. in Educational Leadership at UConn in May 2023, with a focus on higher education, critical whiteness studies, and academic advising. Her dissertation, titled \u201cSystemic Whiteness, Racial Consciousness, and Deconstructing Becky(s): A Phenomenological Study of White Women STEM Academic Advisors\u201d, delved into how whiteness affects academic advising in predominantly white spaces.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI noticed there was a much bigger gap in terms of the diversity. In the humanities, there were a lot more diverse students. When I came over to the pharmacy, I saw a lot of these students, who looked like me\u2014they&#8217;re white\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Delaney\u2019s journey from advising liberal arts students to working with STEM students highlighted stark differences in diversity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She describes a &#8220;light bulb moment&#8221; during her doctoral studies when she realized that the educational system often frames students as the problem rather than addressing the inequities built into the system. &#8220;We need to think about how the system is set up to benefit certain students over others,&#8221; Delaney says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-220833 alignleft img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Provost_Faculty_Awards_016-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Provost_Faculty_Awards_016-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Provost_Faculty_Awards_016-681x1024.jpg 681w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Provost_Faculty_Awards_016-768x1154.jpg 768w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Provost_Faculty_Awards_016-1022x1536.jpg 1022w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Provost_Faculty_Awards_016-1363x2048.jpg 1363w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Provost_Faculty_Awards_016-279x420.jpg 279w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Provost_Faculty_Awards_016-442x665.jpg 442w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Provost_Faculty_Awards_016-scaled.jpg 1703w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 200px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 200\/300;\" \/>Her research found that white women advisors often reinforce existing social hierarchies and gender norms in their advising, making it harder for students of color.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Delaney has consistently advocated for change, serving on various committees at UConn, including the School of Pharmacy&#8217;s Diversity Committee and the Wellness Committee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She hopes to collaborate with UConn\u2019s Central University Advising to develop in-depth training that moves beyond basic sessions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;There\u2019s a lot of work that needs to be done to break down those barriers,&#8221; she says, emphasizing that while most advisors want to improve, many lack the tools to do so effectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reflecting on her work, Delaney acknowledges the challenges she faced, such as time constraints and difficult conversations.
