{"id":221159,"date":"2024-11-13T13:06:32","date_gmt":"2024-11-13T18:06:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=221159"},"modified":"2025-09-29T11:48:48","modified_gmt":"2025-09-29T15:48:48","slug":"students-deliver-free-dental-care-at-major-statewide-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2024\/11\/students-deliver-free-dental-care-at-major-statewide-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Students Deliver Free Dental Care at Major Statewide Event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Students in the School of Dental Medicine participated in this year\u2019s Connecticut Mission of Mercy (CT MOM) Free Dental Clinic in Waterbury, providing free oral health care to underserved and uninsured individuals across the state.<\/p>\n<p>This year, 39 third- year and 14 fourth-year students, along with faculty, provided direct patient care during the two-day event. Eight first and second-year students assisted with patient triage, escort, and post-op instructions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_221175\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-221175\" style=\"width: 268px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-221175 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/IMG_7106.jpg\" alt=\"dental students screening patient\" width=\"268\" height=\"357\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/IMG_7106.jpg 786w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/IMG_7106-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/IMG_7106-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/IMG_7106-315x420.jpg 315w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/IMG_7106-499x665.jpg 499w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 268px) 100vw, 268px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 268px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 268\/357;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-221175\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students deliver care at the 2024 CT Mission of Mercy free dental clinic.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cReflecting on this past weekend, it was a powerful reminder of the impact we can have when we come together to serve,&#8221;\u00a0 said student leader and third-year student Alexis Vasciannie. \u201cIn a fast-paced and unpredictable environment, I witnessed many of classmates and fellow student volunteers demonstrate incredible adaptability, fully immersing themselves in their experience, to help restore health and confidence in the community members we served.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the event, we had all of our UConn faculty and students wear bright pink scrub caps to make us easy to identify,\u201d said student leader and third-year Michael Truhlar. \u201cLooking around the gym, it was amazing to see the impact that UConn has on the event. By the end of each day, the majority of providers left in the gym were UConn affiliated. These final hours were crucial to ensure that patients who had been waiting all day for their treatment would not be left to seek care elsewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ten School of Dental Medicine faculty were also in attendance, assisting the students as they provided care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe worked closely with CT MOM department chairs so students could directly treat patients next to volunteer dentists and hygienists,\u201d said Dr. Ron Albert, assistant professor in general dentistry. \u201cOur students felt as meaningful contributors to the overall mission.\u00a0\u00a0 We had students in oral surgery, restorative, hygiene, and pediatric dentistry delivering care with their faculty.\u00a0 Not only did their patients appreciate their kind nature during the free clinic, the students grew professionally from the gratitude expressed by all.\u00a0 We will be back!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe students who attended were able to gain valuable experience with a variety of procedures and contribute to the community by treating patients with so many needs,\u201d said Dr. Sarita Arteaga, associate dean for students. \u201cThe faculty who helped with the students were so dedicated and attentive, they engaged in active learning and allowed the students to complete more procedures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The School of Dental Medicine has participated in CT MOM every year since its inception in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>CT MOM provides free dental services for underserved and uninsured individuals who cannot afford the cost of care.
