Recognizing its significance, he partnered with Maruyama and a team of scholars and artists to examine Negoro\u2019s impact at UConn. Their research soon uncovered an unexpected discovery\u2014this year marks 60 years since Negoro\u2019s arrival at the University.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Maruyama, who studies Japanese American incarceration and had family imprisoned at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heartmountain.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Heart Mountain<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, quickly realized that while Negoro had a profound impact on her students and the School of Fine Arts, little had been documented in archives or other public history sources.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Determined to preserve that legacy, Maruyama began seeking out information from Negoro\u2019s former colleagues and students.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cOne year is not a lot of time to create an exhibition,\u201d says Maruyama, who previously worked at the Smithsonian Institution. \u201cIt&#8217;s very typical for an exhibition to take five to eight years, but I just think her story is so important and hasn\u2019t gotten the attention that she deserved.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"none\">From Internment to UConn Professor <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;134245418&quot;:true,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:160,&quot;335559739&quot;:80,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Just a semester away from graduating from the University of California, Los Angeles, Negoro and her family were among the 125,000 Japanese Americans forcibly removed from the West Coast and placed in incarceration camps across the U.S. in 1942. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Although Negoro was an art major, she didn\u2019t learn to use a potter\u2019s wheel until she arrived at Heart Mountain, Wyoming. There, she was one of six people hired to work at the Heart Mountain Ceramics Plant, according to Maruyama. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She developed her skills through a government initiative to use imprisoned Japanese Americans to produce tableware for the U.S. Army and other incarceration camps. This was not just an art class.
