{"id":226825,"date":"2025-03-17T07:15:46","date_gmt":"2025-03-17T11:15:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=226825"},"modified":"2025-12-19T08:43:06","modified_gmt":"2025-12-19T13:43:06","slug":"did-you-know-uconn-health-offers-retail-pharmacy-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2025\/03\/did-you-know-uconn-health-offers-retail-pharmacy-services\/","title":{"rendered":"Did You Know: UConn Health Offers Retail Pharmacy Services?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly five years after opening as a specialty pharmacy, UConn Health Pharmacy Services Inc. is establishing itself as a competitive option in the retail pharmacy market.<\/p>\n<p>Most retail medications are available there, in addition to specialty drugs. Nearly all insurance plans are accepted, including Caremark, which is part of the state employee benefit package.<\/p>\n<p>Prescriptions filled by UConn Health Pharmacy Services Inc. (UHPSI) are available for pickup weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Building One of the Exchange, 270 Farmington Ave., which is across the street from UConn Health\u2019s main campus. Shipping to the home is also an option with most medications.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re an accredited pharmacy, which sets us apart from other retail,\u201d says Dr. Hetal Patel, the pharmacy manager.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe accreditation standards we maintain ensure every patient has access to the pharmacy professionals at UConn Health,\u201d says Pharmacy Director Emmett Sullivan, \u201993 (PHARM). \u201cOur team treats every patient as individual and will help them with their specific needs. (Tina Encarnacion\/UConn Health photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Another accreditation standard is responsiveness to callers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have an 11-second turnaround time and 99.9% patient satisfaction when it comes to answering our phones,\u201d Patel says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there was a question that a patient had about any medication they\u2019re getting filled in the community, they can call us and talk to the UConn Health pharmacist and see how we can service them,\u201d Sullivan says. \u201cBecause there are questions that come up, and we have pharmacists here who can answer those questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UConn Health Pharmacy Services Inc. opened in 2020 as a specialty pharmacy with a staff of three, no insurance contracts, and little inventory. In recent years, patients who were going there for specialty drugs started filling their traditional prescriptions there too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom 2021 to today, we\u2019ve increased our volume by about 500%,\u201d Sullivan says. \u201cOver the course of time, we realized there was a greater need for traditional retail prescriptions, especially as we\u2019ve heard the pains people have been suffering at retail pharmacies, whether it\u2019s a decrease in hours or closings. (Imaged from MyChart in UConn Health&#8217;s Epic electronic health record)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And the out-of-pocket expenses are comparable if not favorable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt may be the same, and if not, we\u2019re going to look at if there\u2019s a co-pay program from the manufacturer that may even make it lower for you,\u201d Sullivan says. \u201cWe do that on a quite regular basis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UConn Health Pharmacy Services Inc. is an option in UConn Health\u2019s electronic health record system, Epic. Patients using the corresponding patient portal, MyChart, can select it through the \u201cManage My Pharmacies\u201d option on the \u201cMedications\u201d page, noting that \u201cUConn Health Infusion Pharmacy\u201d is also a choice.
