Araya<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Arturo O. Araya (B.S. Civil Engineering, \u201992) was named to the board of directors at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brainstorm-cell.com\/\">BrainStorm Cell Therapeutics Inc.<\/a>, a leading developer of adult stem cell technologies for neurodegenerative diseases.\u00a0 Araya was formerly vice president and head of Global Commercial for the Cell and Gene Therapies Unit at Novartis.\u00a0 In that position, he led a cross-functional team to commercialize a global portfolio of cell and gene therapies.\u00a0 He earned a master\u2019s in Political Science at UConn and an MBA from the University of Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23426\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23426\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23426 size-full img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/MJaworowski.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 150px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 150\/150;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23426\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mark R. Jaworowski<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mark R. Jaworowski (B.S. Chemical Engineering, \u201984, M.S., Ph.D. Materials Science, \u201989, \u201998) was elected to the <a href=\"ctcase.org\">Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering<\/a>, a private, nonprofit, public-service institution patterned after the National Academy of Sciences. \u00a0Jaworowski, a fellow, physical sciences department at United Technologies Research Center, is an expert in the areas of corrosion science and the application of Green Chemistry principles to industrial process development.\u00a0 The 24 newly elected members will be introduced, and the medal of science conferred, at the Academy\u2019s 42<sup>nd<\/sup> annual meeting and dinner on May 22, 2017.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Two members of the UConn Academy of Distinguished Engineers, Kenneth B. Bowes, vice president of engineering at Eversource Energy, and David B. Carter, senior vice president, engineering, at Pratt &amp; Whitney, were also elected to the Academy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23424\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23424\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23424 size-full img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/SMachuga.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 150px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 150\/150;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23424\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Steven C. Machuga<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Steven C. Machuga (B.S. Chemical Engineering, \u201986) has been promoted to vice president of worldwide operations at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.skyworksinc.com\/\">Skyworks Solutions, Inc.<\/a>, an innovator of high performance analog semiconductors.\u00a0 Machuga has been with the company since 1999, most recently serving as Skyworks\u2019 vice president of external manufacturing and operations engineering.\u00a0 Prior to joining Skyworks, he worked for Motorola in various semiconductor engineering and manufacturing management roles. \u00a0Machuga holds a master\u2019s degree in Chemical Engineering from University of Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23425\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23425\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23425 size-full img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/BobMcDermott-1.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 150px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 150\/150;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23425\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Robert J. McDermott<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Robert \u201cBob\u201d J. McDermott (B.S. Civil Engineering, \u201977) was appointed president at <a href=\"http:\/\/huitt-zollars.com\/\">Huitt-Zollars, Inc.<\/a>, a full-service engineering and architecture firm headquartered in Dallas, TX.\u00a0 A founder and past president, McDermott will remain as Chairman of the Board.\u00a0 Preceding this appointment, he served as executive vice president of the firm since 2001.\u00a0 McDermott also holds a master\u2019s degree in Civil Engineering from Lehigh University and an MBA from Keller Graduate School of Management.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>In Memorium<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Herbert (\u201cHerb\u201d) S. Levinson, 92, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legacy.com\/obituaries\/nhregister\/obituary.aspx?pid=184172811\">died<\/a> on February 17, 2017 in New Haven, CT.\u00a0 Levinson was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 1994, elected an Honorary Member of the Institute of Transportation Engineers in 1997, received the ASCE Wilbur Smith Award, was a member of the Transportation Research Board (TRB), and received the Presidential Design Award for Excellence.\u00a0 He was a senior vice president of Wilbur Smith and Associates, served on the faculty of the University of Connecticut and Yale University, and worked at his own firm.<\/p>\n<p>Tina (Lizzi) Lewis (B.S. Electrical Engineering, \u201955), one of the first two women to receive degrees from UConn Engineering, died on February 19, 2017 in Glastonbury, CT, following a courageous battle with cancer.\u00a0 Lewis, inducted into the UConn Academy of Distinguished Engineers in 2015, received special recognition during the UConn Engineering 2016 commencement ceremony and the centennial Gadget Gurus Gala celebration in November. An upcoming <em>Momentum<\/em> article will provide more information about her remarkable life and career.
