{"id":234381,"date":"2025-09-02T11:46:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T15:46:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=234381"},"modified":"2025-09-05T14:35:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-05T18:35:13","slug":"ccerc-grant-supports-ssw-study-on-standards-for-school-social-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2025\/09\/ccerc-grant-supports-ssw-study-on-standards-for-school-social-workers\/","title":{"rendered":"CCERC Grant Supports SSW Study on Standards for School Social Workers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the Spring of 2025, the UConn School of Social Work received a $200K <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.ct.gov\/ccerc?language=en_US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for Connecticut Education Research Collaboration<\/a> (CCERC) Social Work Practice in School Study award, designed to solicit researchers with diverse backgrounds and skillsets in order to create teams who investigate key questions relating to the education of Connecticut students. The study will examine the application of the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/portal.ct.gov\/SDE\/Publications\/Delivery-of-School-Social-Work-Services\/preface\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Standards for School Social Work Practice<\/a>,&#8221; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 275\/275;\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-234964\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vivien Roman-Hampton<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Through their winning proposal <i>Standards in Practice: Examining the Impact of Social Work Guidelines on School Social Worker Roles and Stress<\/i>, UConn SSW Co-Principal Investigators Gio Iacono, assistant professor, and Caitlin Elsaesser, associate professor, are challenged with examining the application of the<i> Standards for School Social Work Practice<\/i>: foundations of social work practice; education and learning systems and organizations; collaboration; assessment; intervention; and professional development.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Regina Lester-Harriat, assistant professor in residence and Ph.D. student Vivien Roman-Hampton, MSW, LICSW are two other members of the core research team.<\/p>\n<p>In consideration of school social workers\u2019 high student needs, limited resources, and organizational challenges, the study explores how social workers interpret and implement the <i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Standards<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and examines stress and burnout. Using surveys and interviews across Connecticut\u2019s school districts, the study engages an advisory board to maximize research impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Questions considered during their touch upon social workers and their perceived impact on students, and how they see their role as social workers in fostering systematic change within the school system. Those surveyed will be asked about their own impact on school policies that address student mental health and how to implement measures of progressive improvement.<\/p>\n<p>Inversely, the well-being of the school social worker will be explored, as well, including mental health practice and acts of mindfulness and the perceptions of those acts on fostering wellness. Finally, the study will determine the strategies school social workers use, and what additional resources or supports are needed to better manage social worker mental health and professional burnout.<\/p>\n<p>Social workers are vital in supporting students\u2019 academic, social, and emotional well-being.
