{"id":235008,"date":"2025-09-12T07:15:02","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T11:15:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=235008"},"modified":"2025-09-16T11:59:16","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T15:59:16","slug":"emmanouil-anagnostou-named-fellow-of-the-american-meteorological-society","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2025\/09\/emmanouil-anagnostou-named-fellow-of-the-american-meteorological-society\/","title":{"rendered":"Emmanouil Anagnostou Named Fellow of the American Meteorological Society"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The University of Connecticut is proud to announce that Emmanouil \u201cManos\u201d Anagnostou, Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor and Eversource Energy Endowed Chair of Environmental Engineering, has been elected a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ametsoc.org\/ams\/about-ams\/news\/news-releases\/american-meteorological-society-announces-2026-weather-water-and-climate-honorees\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Fellow of the American Meteorological Society (AMS).<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0 <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The AMS Fellowship is one of the highest honors in the atmospheric and related sciences, awarded to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of the field.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">This prestigious honor recognizes Anagnostou\u2019s groundbreaking contributions to remote sensing hydrology, hydrometeorology, and environmental engineering.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Anagnostou\u2019s pioneering research has transformed how scientists understand and quantify precipitation, characterize uncertainty, and predict the impact from extreme weather events. His early work demonstrated that radar observations from NASA\u2019s Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM)\u00a0and Global Precipitation Mission (GPM) satellites could be used to calibrate ground-based weather radars \u2014 a methodology now adopted by the U.S. National Weather Service and international agencies. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>At UConn, Anagnostou is the executive director of <a href=\"https:\/\/techpark.uconn.edu\/\">UConn Tech Park<\/a> and the executive director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/environment.institute.uconn.edu\/\">Institute of the Environment and Energy (IoEE)<\/a>. He is also the founding director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eversource.uconn.edu\/\">UConn\u2019s Eversource Energy Center<\/a>, an academic-industry research partnership promoting energy grid resilience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnagnostou\u2019s election as an AMS Fellow is a testament to his scientific excellence and global impact,\u201d says Pamir Alpay, Vice President for Research, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship. \u201cFrom his professorial duties in the College of Engineering to his leadership at UConn Tech Park and IoEE, he is a vital contributor to UConn\u2019s scholarly community. His work was featured by the United Nations in their Academic Impact reporting.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThis honor is a well-deserved recognition of Anagnostou&#8217;s pioneering contributions to hydrometeorology and remote sensing,\u201d says JC Zhao, Dean of the College of Engineering. \u201cHis work has advanced scientific understanding and has had a profound impact on real-world applications in weather prediction and water resource management. At the College of Engineering, we are proud to celebrate Anagnostou&#8217;s excellence and leadership in the field. He exemplifies the true potential of engineering research.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Beyond his research, Anagnostou has served in leadership roles across the AMS, the American Geophysical Union (AGU), and the European Geosciences Union (EGU). He currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of the\u00a0Journal of Hydrology\u00a0and Vice President of the International Commission of Water Resources Systems of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Anagnostou also fosters the spirit of scientific inquiry and service among his scholarly mentees. As just one example, Viviana Maggioni \u201812 Ph.D. is currently serving as the Editor in Chief for Journal of Hydrometeorology.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cIt\u2019s a true privilege to receive this recognition from my respected peers at the American Meteorological Society,\u201d says Anagnostou. \u201cFor more than 25 years, I\u2019ve devoted my research to the field of precipitation and hydrometeorological hazards \u2014 an area that is becoming increasingly important as we face more frequent and intense extreme weather events. Advancing hydrological and meteorological science is essential to protecting human life and the structures that enable it.
