As a finalist, the book will receive either a gold, silver, or bronze medal. Final rankings will be announced at the official awards ceremony on Oct. 25.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.empoweringlatinofutures.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Empowering Latino Futures<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> is a nonprofit organization that aims to remove barriers to educational and professional success for the Latino community and underserved groups. Its International Latino Book Awards recognize excellence in books by and about Latinos, with this year\u2019s competition receiving more than 5,000 entries reviewed by 222 judges.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This latest recognition adds to a growing list of accolades for &#8220;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Central America in the Crosshairs of War: On the Road from Vietnam to Iraq<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">which has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forewordreviews.com\/awards\/books\/central-america-in-the-crosshairs-of-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">won gold<\/span>\u00a0in the <span data-contrast=\"none\">Foreword INDIES Awards<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in the category of political and social sciences, along with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ippyawards.com\/blog\/2025-medalists-categories-35-65\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Gold IPPY from the Independent Book Publishers Association<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> as best history book.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"TextRun SCXW179224957 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW179224957 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"heading 2\">Political Science Professor Shareen Hertel Named <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW179224957 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"heading 2\">2<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW179224957 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"heading 2\">0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW179224957 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"heading 2\">2<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW179224957 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"heading 2\">5<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW179224957 BCX0\" data-ccp-parastyle=\"heading 2\">Distinguished Scholar<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/polisci.uconn.edu\/person\/shareen-hertel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Shareen Hertel<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, professor of political science and Wiktor Osiaty\u0144ski Chair of Human Rights, has been named the 2025 Distinguished Scholar by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apsanet.org\/membership\/organized-sections\/organized-section-awards\/past-awards\/section-36\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">American Political Science Association\u2019s (APSA)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Human Rights Section.<\/span><\/a><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This honor recognizes Hertel&#8217;s contributions as an individual working in the field of human rights and her exceptional contributions to the field through research, teaching, and mentorship. She is the third UConn faculty member to receive the award, following former faculty member Richard Hiskes in 2022 and Professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/polisci.uconn.edu\/person\/zehra-arat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Zehra Arat<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in 2021. Arat founded the APSA Human Rights Section 25 years ago. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apsanet.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">APSA<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is a professional organization serving more than 11,000 members in over 100 countries.
