{"id":236248,"date":"2025-10-17T07:30:36","date_gmt":"2025-10-17T11:30:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=236248"},"modified":"2025-10-17T12:45:27","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T16:45:27","slug":"a-century-of-sound-at-uconns-whus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2025\/10\/a-century-of-sound-at-uconns-whus\/","title":{"rendered":"A Century of Sound at UConn&#8217;s WHUS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW262544337 BCX0\">UConn\u2019s student-run radio station<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW262544337 BCX0\">, WHUS, which broadcasts<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW262544337 BCX0\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW262544337 BCX0\">a wide variety of music <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW262544337 BCX0\">along with University news and events, has been a staple of <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW262544337 BCX0\">the<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW262544337 BCX0\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW262544337 BCX0\">stude<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW262544337 BCX0\">nt <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW262544337 BCX0\">and community<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW262544337 BCX0\"> experience for <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW262544337 BCX0\">over\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW262544337 BCX0\">a century. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW262544337 BCX0\">To c<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW262544337 BCX0\">ommemorate more than 100 years of student radio at UConn<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW262544337 BCX0\">,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW262544337 BCX0\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW262544337 BCX0\">Jonathan\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW262544337 BCX0\">K<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW262544337 BCX0\">opeliovich<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW262544337 BCX0\"> &#8217;24 <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW262544337 BCX0\">(CLAS)<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW262544337 BCX0\"> has created the new <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.whus.org\/\" rel=\"\">WHUS History Archive<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW176782577 BCX0\">WHUS has been a place for people to express themselves, whether it\u2019s through unique music, covering topics you\u2019re <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW176782577 BCX0\">interested in<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW176782577 BCX0\">, or local news on campus, there&#8217;s just so many ways to get involved,&#8221;<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW176782577 BCX0\">\u00a0says\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW176782577 BCX0\">Kopeliovich<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW176782577 BCX0\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>WHUS &#8211; 91.7 on the FM dial or online at <a href=\"https:\/\/whus.org\/\">whus.org<\/a> &#8211; traces its history to 1923, when, largely thanks to an Engineering major named Daniel Noble, student radio in Storrs began with a 100-watt station using the call letters WABL, which would later change to WCAC and finally WHUS. They provided me with a community and friends, and that was\u00a0very valuable\u00a0to me,\u201d says\u00a0Kopeliovich. \u201cWhen it came time in senior year, I wanted to pay it forward and working on this was the perfect way to do it.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kopeliovich began the task of archiving the rich history of WHUS for his senior project and received essential help from UConn Library&#8217;s Department of Archives and Special Collections. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWhat we do as an archive is identify materials that have long-term lasting information or documentation that is a value over time,\u201d says\u00a0Betsy Pittman, the University Archivist and Records Management Liaison Officer. \u201cAnniversaries are a big trigger of interest, and\u00a0now WHUS has this website they can refer to, drawing\u00a0consciousness\u00a0towards\u00a0their\u00a0long\u00a0history.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Pittman supported Kopeliovich in his endeavor to recover a century&#8217;s worth of audio tapes starting in 2023, during his senior year. They identified the collections that would enhance the creation of the project and went through boxes of tapes, prompting Kopeliovich to reach out to more than 80 people who had shows on WHUS over the years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW46533430 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW46533430 BCX0\">\u201c<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW46533430 BCX0\">What\u2019s unique about the contribution of this archive is that it is a community-based archive<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW46533430 BCX0\">,\u201d says UConn Library Archivist Graham Stinnett, who interviewed Kopeliovich on WHUS&#8217;s archives podcast, <a href=\"https:\/\/whus.org\/2025\/09\/episode-57-whus-100\/\"><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">d&#8217;Archive<\/span><\/a>. \u201cJonathan\u2019s approach to making a legible archive that is not physically held in just one place is part of a larger approach to archives that is far more empowering of individuals and their role in creating history about whatever that community is; in this case, it\u2019s being a college DJ.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_236356\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-236356\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-236356 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/whus1940-300x230.jpg\" alt=\"An archival black and white photo showing students posing in suits and dresses.\" width=\"400\" height=\"307\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/whus1940-300x230.jpg 300w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/whus1940-1024x785.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/whus1940-768x589.jpg 768w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/whus1940-1536x1178.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/whus1940-548x420.jpg 548w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/whus1940-867x665.jpg 867w, https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/whus1940.jpg 1579w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 400px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 400\/307;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-236356\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Radio drama was a staple of student radio in its early years, with this 1940 photo of the station&#8217;s in-house acting troupe serving as a reminder (Department of Archives &amp; Special Collections\/UConn Library)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">While WHUS clearly had a profound impact on Kopeliovich himself, the interviews he conducted illustrated just how important WHUS is to so many members of the UConn community. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cIf actions speak louder than words, taking time out of your day to talk about this niche radio station that you were a part of during a four-year period in\u00a0your\u00a0life speaks to how much WHUS impacted people,\u201d says\u00a0Kopeliovich.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Kopeliovich shares that this archive was a deeply collaborative effort and the support of his fellow students helped bring the project to life. So, they barred themselves into the studio&#8221; to keep broadcasting.<\/p>\n<p>While these are only two of the many stories Kopeliovich got to hear while researching the history of WHUS, his archive allows anyone to learn about the moments that has made the radio station such a major part of the UConn story.<\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">&#8220;This history being brought forward has helped students and WHUS members recognize that they&#8217;re carrying the banner of radio going forward, giving them more power to think about why radio and carrying on its legacy is important,&#8221; says Stinnett.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For the archivists, the documented history of one of UConn&#8217;s largest student-run organizations is a reminder of the merit of preserving memories.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW213952211 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW213952211 BCX0\">&#8220;The University archives <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2Themed SCXW213952211 BCX0\">is<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW213952211 BCX0\"> all about the people,\u201d says Pittman. \u201cEveryone has their own unique reasons for coming here, but each one of those people who come here<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW213952211 BCX0\"> adds a little piece to the puzzle that is the history of the University <span class=\"TextRun SCXW68085243 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW68085243 BCX0\">and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW68085243 BCX0\">that experience is reciprocal. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW68085243 BCX0\">N<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW68085243 BCX0\">o matter how minuscule you think your experience here is, you have\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW68085243 BCX0\">mad<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW68085243 BCX0\">e a contribution<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW68085243 BCX0\">.
