{"id":236656,"date":"2025-10-15T10:32:17","date_gmt":"2025-10-15T14:32:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=236656"},"modified":"2025-10-15T10:32:17","modified_gmt":"2025-10-15T14:32:17","slug":"national-society-chooses-uconn-healths-dr-lauren-geaney","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2025\/10\/national-society-chooses-uconn-healths-dr-lauren-geaney\/","title":{"rendered":"National Society Chooses UConn Health\u2019s Dr. Lauren Geaney"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UConn Health\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uconnhealth.org\/providers\/profiles\/Geaney-Lauren\">Dr. Lauren Geaney<\/a> \u201908 MD is now part of the leadership group of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.<\/p>\n<p>Geaney, a foot and ankle surgeon who joined UConn Health in 2013, is an associate professor of orthopedic surgery and associate director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/health.uconn.edu\/musculoskeletal-institute\/orthopedic-residency\/overview\/\">UConn Orthopaedic Residency Program<\/a>. She is now among the 11 physicians who make up the AOFAS Board of Directors.<\/p>\n<p>Her involvement with the AOFAS, a national organization with a vision of leading the global community in foot and ankle education, research, innovation, and advocacy, goes back to 2010, when she was a trainee in the residency program she now helps lead. She since has served on several AOFAS boards and committees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI participated in their inaugural year of Resident Scholars and was given a scholarship to attend their annual meeting,\u201d Geaney says. \u201cThat was when I realized how interested I was in the specialty and decided to commit. That\u2019s also part of the reason that I\u2019m so excited to be nominated and selected for this position \u2014 a true \u2018full circle\u2019 moment!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three years ago, the AOFAS presented Geaney with its <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2022\/05\/national-accolade-for-uconn-healths-dr-lauren-geaney\/\">Women\u2019s Leadership Career Development Award<\/a> for her work to break down gender barriers in orthopedic surgery, a historically male-dominated field.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Society has been an integral part of my development as a surgeon and educator, and I\u2019m honored to be able to give back by serving in this role,\u201d Geaney says. \u201cThis opportunity is really humbling considering how impressive the other candidates were. This allows me to participate on the board of directors with the current president, vice president, treasurer and secretary to make meaningful change to our society and most importantly our patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Geaney took office as an at-large member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aofas.org\/about-us\/board-of-directors\">AOFAS Board of Directors<\/a> at the society\u2019s annual meeting last month.
