{"id":239243,"date":"2025-12-16T15:55:12","date_gmt":"2025-12-16T20:55:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=239243"},"modified":"2026-03-11T11:22:45","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T15:22:45","slug":"two-ambitious-uconn-grad-students-win-top-prizes-in-national-insurance-competition-focused-on-pet-care-policies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2025\/12\/two-ambitious-uconn-grad-students-win-top-prizes-in-national-insurance-competition-focused-on-pet-care-policies\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Ambitious UConn Grad Students Win Top Prizes in National Insurance Competition Focused on Pet-Care Policies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two UConn graduate students took home the first-place and runner-up awards in the ACORD Student Challenge, an insurance-industry competition that drew dozens of participants from across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Manasa Ramaka, a graduate student in the Business Analytics and Project Management (BAPM) program, took first place and accepted the $5,000 grand prize. Rutendo Mahanzu, a graduate student enrolled in the Financial and Enterprise Risk Management (FERM) program, shared the runner-up prize with a student from Georgia Tech, and took home a $2,000 award.<\/p>\n<p>Participants in the ACORD challenge apply AI and data science skills to a real-world insurance problem. This year, they addressed the underwriting challenges for pet insurance, a more than $21 billion industry worldwide that is growing rapidly.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018I Felt Prepared to Build Something Thoughtful and Detailed\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Both women said their UConn education had prepared them well for the competition.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_239250\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-239250\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-239250 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/pp.jpg\" alt=\"Portrait of Manasa Ramaka\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 200px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 200\/300;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-239250\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Manasa Ramaka (contributed photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMy education at UConn gave me a solid foundation in analytics and practical problem solving,\u2019\u2019 Ramaka said. \u201cExperiential learning opportunities helped me work comfortably with real data and to think independently. I\u2019m grateful for that environment because it encouraged me to take on large, open-ended challenges. When ACORD created this platform, I felt prepared to bring my own ideas forward and build something thoughtful and detailed.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not have a pet of my own, but my best friend has a dog named Shero, and he cares for him a lot,\u2019\u2019 Ramaka said. \u201cHearing about their experiences made me more curious about pet insurance and helped me understand why the topic matters to many families. That personal connection made the project more engaging for me.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>She blended AI-generated insights with real insurance carrier information and then spend a great deal of time refining, organizing, and clarifying the data, focusing on depth, accuracy, and purpose. Ramaka said believes her ability to turn assorted data into something structured helped her work stand out. She also appreciated the competition allowing her the creativity to address the project in the way she felt was best.<\/p>\n<p>After her completing her degree, Ramaka plans to seek a role where she can combine analytics with product development and communication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI enjoy solving complex problems and creating structure where it is needed. I am interested in industries where good data can improve experiences for people \u2026a position where I can contribute meaningful insights and lead projects with real impact,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n<h2>Coursework Teaches Students to Think Like Professionals<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_239251\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-239251\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-239251 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/thumbnail_IMG_6444.jpg\" alt=\"Portrait of Rutendo Mahanzu\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 200px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 200\/300;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-239251\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rutendo Mahanzu (contributed photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mahanzu said UConn gave her a strong foundation in risk management, data modeling, and applied analytics through coursework that pushes students to think like industry practitioners.<br \/>\nExperiential learning and industry events showed her how insurers think, how standards drive decision-making, and how innovation occurs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope to build a career in insurance and enterprise risk analytics, ideally working at the intersection of data science, emerging technology, and risk strategy,\u2019\u2019 Mahanzu said. \u201cLong term, I\u2019m passionate about contributing to innovative solutions in cyber, parametric, or specialty insurance, and helping organizations better understand and manage evolving risks.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>As the owner of four dogs, Mahanzu said the challenge resonated with her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt definitely made the topic more personal and exciting. When you\u2019ve loved animals your whole life, building systems that protect them feels meaningful,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n<p>Mahanzu said what she enjoyed most about the competition was working on a real-world problem that tested her curiosity, creativity, and technical depth. She believes her work stood out because of the depth of validation she applied, the way she connected ACORD frameworks to actual insurance provider workflows, and the clarity of her presentation. \u201cI wanted to show not just what I built, but why it matters for the industry,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n<p>Dominating the insurance competition was particularly poignant, Mahanzu said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConnecticut has a long, proud history as the Insurance Capital of the World, and UConn sits right at the center of that ecosystem.
