{"id":239516,"date":"2025-12-22T10:46:39","date_gmt":"2025-12-22T15:46:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=239516"},"modified":"2025-12-22T10:46:39","modified_gmt":"2025-12-22T15:46:39","slug":"uconn-health-cancer-center-named-state-partner-in-comprehensive-cancer-control-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2025\/12\/uconn-health-cancer-center-named-state-partner-in-comprehensive-cancer-control-program\/","title":{"rendered":"UConn Health Cancer Center Named State Partner in Comprehensive Cancer Control Program\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uconnhealth.org\/cancer-blood-disorders\">UConn Health\u2019s Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center\u00a0<\/a>has\u00a0been named a partner with the Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH) in the state\u2019s\u00a0statewide cancer coalition\u00a0the Connecticut Cancer Partnership\u00a0(CCP), recognizing\u00a0UConn Health\u2019s leadership in cancer prevention, treatment, and survivorship.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The partnership, supported by\u00a0$525,000 in federal funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will strengthen statewide<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">efforts\u00a0t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">o reduce cancer incidence and mortality, address health disparities, and improve access to\u00a0care for all Connecticut residents.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0DPH selected UConn Health based on its long-standing involvement in statewide cancer initiatives and its deep clinical, research, and academic\u00a0expertise. UConn Health\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">faculty and staff\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have\u00a0played active roles on\u00a0the CT Cancer Partnership\u2019s\u00a0advisory committee\u00a0and working groups that support cancer control efforts throughout the state.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As part of the partnership, UConn Health will\u00a0provide administrative support for the coalition and\u00a0serve on the program\u2019s advisory committee through the Connecticut Cancer Partnership, a coalition of more than\u00a0150 organizations working collaboratively to reduce the burden of cancer statewide.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Cancer\u00a0remains\u00a0one of the leading causes of death in Connecticut, affecting tens of thousands of residents each year and touching\u00a0nearly every\u00a0family in the state through prevention and screening, diagnosis, treatment, or survivorship. While advances in early detection and care have improved outcomes, significant challenges\u00a0remain, including disparities in access to care, long-term survivorship needs, and the ongoing impact of cancer on patients, families, and communities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Through this collaboration, UConn Health will help ensure that statewide cancer initiatives are informed by clinical\u00a0expertise, public health data, and the lived experiences of people across Connecticut. Cancer control encompasses a wide range of efforts, from prevention and early detection to effective treatment and addressing the long-term physical, emotional, and social effects of cancer after treatment.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The current Connecticut Cancer Plan runs through 2026, and as the state begins planning for the next phase, UConn Health will play a key role in helping lead the development of the next statewide cancer plan, ensuring it reflects emerging issues, advances in cancer care, and the evolving needs of Connecticut\u2019s diverse communities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThis partnership reflects the confidence the state has in UConn Health\u2019s cancer expertise,\u201d\u00a0Dr. Alicia Dugan, associate\u00a0professor,\u00a0Department of Medicine\u00a0at the UConn School of Medicine, principal investigator for the award. \u201cAs we look ahead to the next cancer plan, we have an opportunity to help shape a future-focused approach that strengthens prevention, improves survivorship, and advances equity in cancer care across the state.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The partnership also creates opportunities for medical and public health\u00a0students\u00a0across the state\u00a0to\u00a0participate\u00a0in cancer control activities, including guideline development, planning initiatives, and collaborative working groups.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Engaging students in this work aligns with UConn Health\u2019s academic mission while expanding the reach of cancer control efforts across the state.\u00a0It also helps ensure that the next generation of health professionals is prepared to address cancer as both a clinical and public health challenge.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Together, UConn Health, statewide health\u00a0centers,\u00a0and DPH aim to build a more coordinated,\u00a0equitable, and forward-looking approach to cancer control in Connecticut.\u00a0By aligning clinical\u00a0expertise, public health strategy, and community partnerships, the collaboration is expected to strengthen prevention efforts, improve outcomes, and help ensure that people across the state have access to high-quality cancer care and support\u00a0now and in the years
