Growing up in\u00a0<\/span>Agartala,\u00a0<\/span>India, <\/span>Bodhi Chaudhuri\u00a0<\/span>mov<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0to the United States after receiving his Bachelor of Chemic<\/span>al Engineering from Jadavpur University<\/span>, Kolkata,<\/span>\u00a0and his masters in the same field from the Indian Institute of Science<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Bangalore<\/span>. After his move,\u00a0<\/span>Chaudhuri\u00a0<\/span>completed<\/span>\u00a0his Ph.D.\u00a0<\/span>program\u00a0<\/span>in Mechanical Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology in 2000.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After completing his education,\u00a0<\/span>Chaudhuri worked in the industry for more than three years as a software engineer in telecommunications, computer graphics, and\u00a0<\/span>AI\/ML technology sectors<\/span>. With a desire to keep<\/span>\u00a0learning, Chaudhuri went to Rutgers for his\u00a0<\/span>postdoctoral<\/span>\u00a0training. It was\u00a0<\/span>at\u00a0<\/span>Rutgers where he was first exposed to pharmaceutical engineerin<\/span>g. After his time at Rutgers, Chaudhuri<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>secured a faculty program specializing in\u00a0<\/span>pharmaceutical<\/span>\u00a0engineering at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UConn School of Pharmacy.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the School, Chaudhuri\u2019s research focuses on advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing\u00a0<\/span>by<\/span>\u00a0exploring new ways to make drugs\u00a0<\/span>through<\/span>\u00a03D printing tablets, continuous manufacturing of injectables or inhalable products, and more. Through\u00a0<\/span>experimentally\u00a0<\/span>valid<\/span>, multiscale computer models, Chaudhuri\u2019s lab<\/span>\u00a0examines materials and processes<\/span>\u00a0from the\u00a0<\/span>sub<\/span>atomic level to full equipment\u00a0<\/span>(<\/span>meso<\/span>)\u00a0<\/span>scale to\u00a0<\/span>design, prototype, and the\u00a0<\/span>optimization<\/span>\u00a0of cost-effective drug product manufacturing technologies.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Aside from his professor and researcher roles at the School,\u00a0<\/span>Chaudhuri is an entrepreneur.\u00a0<\/span>Following his\u00a0<\/span>passions<\/span>\u00a0for modeling,\u00a0<\/span>Chaudhuri<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0chair of computer science at UConn<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Sanguthevar<\/span>\u00a0Rajasekaran<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>created<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>QuaSim<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>a startup\u00a0<\/span>for developing novel quantum algorithms to significantly reduce the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>computer processing time<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>needed for traditional process modeling of powder handling processes.\u00a0<\/span>The applicability of these algorithms in solving real world problems will be\u00a0<\/span>demonstrated<\/span>\u00a0using simulators and existing quantum machines.\u00a0<\/span>Q<\/span>uantum computing<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>leverages<\/span>\u00a0the principles of quantum mechanics to perform computations that are infeasible for classical computers.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

More recently, Chaudhuri<\/span>\u00a0is<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>investigating<\/span>\u00a0trends<\/span>\u00a0in the\u00a0<\/span>pharmaceutical\u00a0<\/span>industry as best he ca<\/span>n by<\/span>\u00a0f<\/span>ocusing on continuous manufacturing and machine learning in his la<\/span>b.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Teaching two professional courses and two graduate courses at the School, Chaudhuri has mentored\u00a0<\/span>more\u00a0<\/span>than <\/span>150<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students over the past 18 years<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0In<\/span>\u00a0supporting\u00a0<\/span>students’<\/span>\u00a0professiona<\/span>l endeavors and preparation,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Chaudhuri brings 7-8 industry speakers to the School each year <\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0organizes industrial tours\u00a0<\/span>of local pharmaceutical companies for students through<\/span>\u00a0his role as<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0faculty chair of UConn\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>International S<\/span>ociety of Pharmaceutical Engineers<\/span>\u00a0(ISPE).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Leila Sharifi and Saeed Najafian are two Ph.D. students under Chaudhuri\u2019s mentorship. <\/span>Both credit Chaudhuri for his hands-on approach<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>openness to learning from mistakes<\/span>. These strategies have helped\u00a0<\/span>Najafian<\/span>\u00a0and Sharifi stay motivated throughout their research and embrace challenges.\u00a0<\/span>Chaudhuri has also encouraged the two to grow their professional skills through seminars, attending conferences, and presenting their research.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Under Chaudhuri\u2019s guidance, Sharifi was honored with the Pharmaceutical Discovery, Development and Manufacturing (PD2M) Award at AIChE’s 2025 Annual Meeting and <\/span>Najafian<\/span> received the First Place Academic Award for his research on multiphase mixing.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Following last\u00a0<\/span>year<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>when<\/span>\u00a0he became an AIChE Fellow, Chaudhuri was inducted as an AAPS Fellow at the\u00a0<\/span>PharmSci<\/span>\u00a0360 Meeting.\u00a0<\/span>After a<\/span>\u00a0highly selective process to honor pharmacists involved in the discovery, development, and manufacturing of drugs and therapies<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0Chaudhuri was only one of eight fellows selected worldwide. He is recognized for his global leadership in pharmaceutical powder technology and multiscale modeling, along with his pioneering research in electrostatics, 3D printing, heat transfer in granular media, and continuous manufacturing platforms.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Involved in multiple sections within AAPS, including the Manufacturing Science and Engineering section (MSE) and the Northeastern Regional Discussion Group (NERDG)<\/span>, Chaudhuri is\u00a0<\/span>strongly<\/span>\u00a0involved with the association.<\/span>\u00a0Through giving talks, organizing sessions,\u00a0<\/span>participating<\/span>\u00a0in panels, and supporting committees,\u00a0<\/span>Chaudhuri is thankful for this recognition from researchers across the pharmaceutical industry.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Recognizing UConn as a leader in the shift from batch to continuous manufacturing in drug formulation, Chaudhuri hopes to remain\u00a0a pioneer in this\u00a0transition. With an NSF Regional Innovation Engine Proposal\u00a0at\u00a0Yale\u00a0and\u00a0a recent allocation of millions of\u00a0dollars\u00a0for quantum computing, big brands like Pfizer, Merck, and\u00a0AstraZeneca\u00a0are funding\u00a0institutes like UConn, committed to making a positive change.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Collaborating with these big companies,\u00a0Chaudhuri aims to develop a more efficient and\u00a0automated\u00a0manufacturing process that can reduce drug costs and improve patient access.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With his induction as\u00a0an\u00a0AAPS Fellow and his 18-year legacy at UConn Pharmacy, Chaudhuri has used a combination of engineering\u00a0and pharmaceutical modeling to help those in his classrooms, lab, and\u00a0communities.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Joining UConn in 2007 as a faculty member, Professor of Pharmaceutics, Bodhisattwa Chaudhuri (Ph.D.), was inducted as a Fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Sciences (AAPS) at its 2025 PharmSci 360 meeting on November 9th.
