Wherever a young jobseeker turns, they can encounter stereotypes about their generation\u2019s supposed aversion to hard work &#8212; resounding messages that Gen Z is entitled, lazy, and unprofessional. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kelly Kennedy, Ed.D., UConn School of Business Director of Transformative Learning and Career Education, takes a different tack. Kennedy teaches a required career development course for all business majors across four campuses (Storrs, Stamford, Hartford, and Waterbury). (Courtesy of Kelly Kennedy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cEvery generation in the workforce comes with its complaints, but I think what we\u2019re missing is that Gen Z is actually pretty amazing,\u201d Kennedy says. \u201cThey are vocal, and they can see the world so differently, in ways that can actually help us all have a healthier work environment.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kennedy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/managers-can-help-their-gen-z-employees-unlock-the-power-of-meaningful-work-heres-how-248993\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">recently conducted a study<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> among Gen Z alumni to better understand their attitudes toward work, and the challenges they face when entering the workforce. She found that for these Gen Z workers, the desire for <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">meaningful<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> work was a key motivating factor.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cDespite landing a seemingly perfect job at a top company with an excellent salary and exciting projects, many early-career alumni cite the absence of \u2018meaningful work\u2019 as the primary factor dampening their engagement,\u201d Kennedy says.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">She believes this is a result of a misalignment between what grads are looking for and what employers are offering. In her work at the School of Business across four campuses, she is exploring avenues to help bridge this gap and create healthier, more fulfilling workplaces for everyone \u2013 a timely focus, as Gen Z is poised to comprise 30% of the US workforce by 2030.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cColleges can&#8217;t change the workplace, but we can help students figure out what work matters to them, and help them get better positioned to find it,\u201d says Kennedy. \u201cWe can challenge our students to become more adaptable, more flexible.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That\u2019s why she\u2019s putting her research into practice at the School of Business and creating more targeted opportunities to help students find their spark.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Confidence in Action<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Before she even knew that the concept of \u201cmeaningful work\u201d was gaining buzz in the business world, Kennedy was inspired to research it after noticing some trends in student feedback.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When she followed up with alumni in the workforce, Kennedy found that the best predictor of job success and satisfaction was not the extrinsic benefits of a job \u2013 perks, exciting projects, even salary \u2013 but the intrinsic sense of alignment.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Employees wanted to feel that their work was making a difference in the world, they told her. In turn, they also wanted to feel that their own individual contributions were valued by their team. It shows up as confidence in action: how students articulate their story, make choices, and pursue industries. One such experience, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2025\/10\/uconn-connecticut-wealth-management-launch-new-program-to-prepare-future-financial-advisers\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">a partnership<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> with Connecticut Wealth Management, introduces more than 200 UConn students annually to the world of financial advising. But what about students who aren\u2019t sure where to begin?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One major obstacle Gen Z job-seekers face, according to Kennedy\u2019s research, is a lack of clarity about who they are and what they are looking for in a job. In May 2026, she is piloting a new course called \u201cThe Business of You,\u201d designed precisely for this challenge. She is adapting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stern.nyu.edu\/experience-stern\/about\/departments-centers-initiatives\/purpose-and-flourishing\/programs\/becoming-you-lab\">Becoming You<\/a> methodology created by Suzy Welch, professor of management practice at the New York University Stern School of Business.
