Hines, vice president of the Office for Inclusion and Civil Rights at UConn and UConn Health was <a href=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2026\/01\/hines-deliver-keynote-address-at-state-mlk-jr-day-commemoration\/\">the featured speaker at the State of Connecticut&#8217;s official celebration<\/a> of King on Jan. 19.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW132849843 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW132849843 BCX8\">At UConn, events honoring King continued with the 2026 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Living Legacy Convocation &amp; Awards on Jan. 30. The event became \u201ca launcher into Black History month,\u201d as Director of Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives Jonelle Reynolds described it. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW6885319 BCX8\">The University of Connecticut 2026 MLK Legacy Awards Committee celebrated community members who <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW6885319 BCX8\">demonstrated<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW6885319 BCX8\"> a commitment to raising awareness, fighting injustice, and embodying King&#8217;s philosophy of nonviolence. This is an area that they&#8217;re passionate about and oftentimes it&#8217;s connected to other areas of their life that is motivating them. The company had a program where he mentored high school students, talking with them about their future goals. \u201cIt really ignited a passion for me working with students to help identify their goals and aspirations,\u201d he said. (Sydney Herdle\/UConn Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Valuing scholarship and student support, Harris donated his cash prize of $250 and matched it to be used on emergency funds for the African American Cultural Center.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dansby, captain of the Women&#8217;s Track and Field team, was nominated for her award by UConn Athletics.
