{"id":24226,"date":"2017-10-25T14:06:34","date_gmt":"2017-10-25T14:06:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/d45h139.public.uconn.edu\/sites\/news\/?p=24226"},"modified":"2024-09-11T16:17:28","modified_gmt":"2024-09-11T20:17:28","slug":"new-3-d-fabrication-technique-deliver-multiple-doses-vaccine-one-shot-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2017\/10\/new-3-d-fabrication-technique-deliver-multiple-doses-vaccine-one-shot-2\/","title":{"rendered":"New 3-D Fabrication Technique Could Deliver Multiple Doses of Vaccine in One Shot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new 3-D fabrication technique invented by a UConn engineering professor could provide a safe and convenient way to deliver multiple doses of a drug over an extended period of time with a single injection.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_130790\" class=\"wp-caption alignright img-responsive\"><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Other 3-D printing techniques have been limited for such applications because they rely on printable inks that are potentially toxic to the human body.<\/p>\n<p>But UConn assistant professor of mechanical engineering Thanh Nguyen circumvented those obstacles by adopting an additive manufacturing technique commonly used for the manufacture of computer chips.<\/p>\n<p>The technique, which Nguyen calls SEAL (StampED Assembly of polymer Layers), can create hundreds of thousands of drug-carrying microparticles made of a biocompatible, FDA-approved polymer currently used for surgical sutures, implants, and prosthetic devices.<\/p>\n<p>During the process, the polymer, PLGA, is shaped into a drug-carrying micro-shell designed to degrade and release its contents over an extended period, ranging from a few days to a few months.
