During his time in the Master of Science in Business Analytics and Project Management program, Tuzov led and contributed to hands-on experiential initiatives in cutting-edge generative AI and machine learning that have helped prepare him for the rapidly evolving world of analytics and artificial intelligence. For incoming students, Tuzov says although it can seem overwhelming, they should take full advantage of the opportunities on offer.

Why did you choose UConn?

I still remember writing my personal statement when applying to UConn and describing the impact I hoped to create through my grad career.

I chose UConn for its strong business analytics program and the broader ecosystem of opportunities within the School of Business. I was looking for a place where I could grow not only academically, but also through real projects, research, and collaboration. UConn offered that balance. I also appreciated the environment – from the energy of the Stamford campus to Connecticut’s nature, it felt like a place where I could fully focus and grow. And as a dog lover, the Husky spirit made it feel even more like home.

What’s your major or field of study, and what drew you to it?

I’m graduating with a Master of Science in Business Analytics and Project Management. What drew me most was the combination of technical and business perspectives. Over the past eight years, I’ve been deeply interested in business, while also seeing how data and machine learning are transforming industries. This program allowed me to bridge both worlds, building data-driven solutions while learning how to lead teams and deliver real impact through strategy and execution.

Did you have a favorite professor or class?

It’s difficult to choose just one, as several professors shaped my experience in different ways. Professor David Wanik introduced me to real-world AI research through deep learning and decentralized systems, fundamentally changing how I see the field. Professor Jennifer Eigo challenged me early with high standards and helped build a strong academic foundation. Professor Wei Chen made generative AI tangible through hands-on consulting projects. I’m also grateful to Professor Natalia Smirnova for involving me in mentoring the Fed Challenge team, which gave me a new perspective on leadership and teaching.

What activities were you involved in as a student?

A central part of my experience was contributing to the BittBridge decentralized AI initiative, where we enabled students to deploy machine learning models on distributed infrastructure. I also served as vice president of the Modlee AI/ML Club, organizing hackathons and industry events. Beyond that, I participated in hackathons and national case competitions, including a top five finish at an InsurTech national competition, and supported the Fed Challenge team while completing leadership certification programs.

What’s one thing that surprised you about UConn?

My first surprise was how far Storrs is from Stamford. But what truly surprised me was the number of opportunities available. UConn actively connects students with industry professionals, supports initiatives, and creates an environment for growth beyond the classroom. That abundance of opportunities allowed me to explore different paths and ultimately choose the ones that aligned most with my goals and interests.

What are your plans after graduation/receiving your degree?

In the short term, I plan to work at the intersection of analytics and AI, building impactful, real-world solutions. Long term, I aim to lead and develop AI-driven products that meaningfully improve how businesses operate and make decisions. I’m also interested in contributing to emerging areas like decentralized AI systems, both through industry work and continued research.

How has UConn prepared you for the next chapter in life?

UConn created an environment that felt like a startup: high expectations, real responsibility, and constant pressure to grow, while still providing the support to experiment and fail safely. Over time, I realized that the fastest growth comes not only from learning, but from contributing. Inspired by this, I focused on building opportunities around me – through research, student initiatives, and collaboration, that extended beyond my own experience. Faculty, mentors, and industry partners were always accessible, offering guidance and perspective. This combination pushed me to expand both technically and personally and gave me the confidence to take on complex challenges in real-world environments.

Any advice for incoming students?

Take full advantage of the opportunities around you, but be intentional. It’s easy to get overwhelmed, so focus on what aligns with your goals while still pushing yourself outside your comfort zone. Stay consistent, ask for help, and don’t go through challenges alone, the support system at UConn is stronger than you think.

What’s one thing everyone should do during their time at UConn?

Engage beyond the classroom. Attend events, connect with professors and industry guests, and build relationships. Some of the most valuable experiences at UConn come from conversations and collaborations that happen outside of lectures.

What will always make you think of UConn?

The people. When I arrived, I didn’t know anyone. Now, I leave with strong relationships and networks across students, faculty, and industry professionals. UConn is where I grew into a better version of myself, and those parts of my life and experiences will forever be with me after graduation. I am deeply grateful that the opportunities at UConn have brought me much closer to my life’s vision, and I look forward to continuing to represent and promote UConn wherever my future work takes me.
