{"id":244539,"date":"2026-04-27T09:45:13","date_gmt":"2026-04-27T13:45:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=244539"},"modified":"2026-04-29T16:24:26","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T20:24:26","slug":"9-school-of-social-work-alumni-honored-at-awards-reception","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2026\/04\/9-school-of-social-work-alumni-honored-at-awards-reception\/","title":{"rendered":"9 School of Social Work Alumni Honored at Awards Reception"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Even in the face of uncertainty, change, and challenging federal funding environment, the UConn School of Social Work faculty, staff, students, and alumni are advancing their mission of social justice every day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur community is remarkably resilient,\u201d said Laura Curran, dean of the School of Social Work.\u00a0\u201cIn this deeply challenging moment for our profession, we continue to move forward with purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On April 21, Curran shared reflections of the state of the School during the annual SSW Alumni Awards Reception, held in the UConn School of Law Stuart F. Smith Reading Room. This year, the School recognized nine alumni for contributing meaningful, impactful work in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Dean Curran presented the first five of the nine awards: the Dean\u2019s Alumni Recognition Awards.<\/p>\n<p>She honored Travis Cooley MSW \u201923, Alyeska Tilly MSW \u201923, Amanda Weech MSW \u201923, Jillian Davey MSW \u201923, and Katie Malgioglio MSW \u201922 for advocating for a more flexible practicum experience for students challenged by the demands of work, family, and life. As a result, the School of Social Work adjusted hour requirements and, allowed students to complete practica within their places of employment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese changes were shaped and strengthened by the voices of these alumni\u2014individuals who understood firsthand the challenges and possibilities of practicum education, and who advocated not only for themselves, but for those who would follow,\u201d Curran said. \u201cThe impact will be felt in the education of our students for years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>School of Social Work Alumni Board of Champions members Yolanda Leon MSW \u201905, and former president Barbie Nadal-Cristofaro MSW \u201916 presented the next four awards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are so excited to gather with you\u2014our alumni, award recipients, students, faculty, and supporters\u2014and to continue strengthening the connections that make the SSW community so special,\u201d Leon said. \u201cOne of the Alumni Board\u2019s goals is to create meaningful opportunities for alumni to come together, reconnect with one another, and build a vibrant, supportive community that reflects our shared values as social workers.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_244564\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-244564\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-244564 img-responsive lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/alumniawards2026_9324-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Awards Reception, held in the UConn School of Law Stuart F. Smith Reading Room. (Olivia Drake\/UConn)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Leon presented the Emerging Social Work Leader Award to Taylor Tucker \u201920 (SSW), MSW \u201921, who is returning next fall to pursue a Ph.D. from the School. This award honors an alum who has demonstrated outstanding leadership early in their career. A U.S. Navy veteran, Tucker currently works for Health Equity Solutions in Hartford as director of the HES Advantage Social Enterprise team, and serves as a strategic partner with the Cadence of Social Impact in Hartford, where he supports values-driven organizations and leaders in advancing equity-centered strategies.<\/p>\n<p>His work includes designing and leading trainings and developing curriculum on race, racism, and equitable leadership across public health and community systems, with a focus on building more inclusive and responsive organizations. Taylor\u2019s work also centers LGBTQ+ communities, with particular attention to transgender identities and lived experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Nadal-Cristofaro honored Almedina Keranovic MSW \u201922 with the Outstanding Field Instructor Award. This award recognizes excellence in mentoring and field education. Keranovic is a mental health program supervisor at the Greater Hartford Family Advocacy Center, where she provides and oversees services for individuals impacted by crime and trauma. (Olivia Drake\/UConn)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Leon presented the Outstanding Social Worker Award to Jos\u00e9 Cotto MSW \u201911. This award recognizes alumni for exceptional contributions and impact in the field.<\/p>\n<p>Cotto works with children and families as a therapist and evaluator. He\u2019s currently the chief program officer at Urban Pathways in New York City, where he leads programs serving individuals experiencing homelessness. He\u2019s played a key role in developing New York\u2019s first \u201chousing launchpad,\u201d which helps individuals with complex needs transition directly from the street into permanent housing with intensive support and care.<\/p>\n<p>Cotto also serves on the board of the Association for Community Living as their NYC regional director and as an adjunct faculty member at New York University, where he teaches courses on clinical practice and social justice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJos\u00e9\u2019s career reflects a strong commitment to dignity, access, and lasting systems change for vulnerable populations,\u201d Leon said.<\/p>\n<p>Nadal-Cristofaro honored Vannessa Dorantes MSW \u201998, LMSW with the Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognizes long-term, significant contributions to the field of social work.<\/p>\n<p>Dorantes serves as managing director at Casey Family Programs, where she works to improve outcomes for children and families nationwide. (Olivia Drake\/UConn)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During her tenure, Connecticut achieved a historic milestone by successfully exiting a decades-long federal consent decree, marking a new chapter for the state\u2019s child welfare system.
