That growth has been fueled by a collaborative approach that supports women before pregnancy, throughout delivery, and long after a baby is born.

UConn Health offers a full spectrum of women’s health and maternity services, including, maternal-fetal medicine, infertility, high risk pregnancy, PMOS and weight management, genetic counseling and specialized care for conditions such as endometriosis and fibroids. A key component of that care is access to comprehensive genetic counseling services available to patients throughout their pregnancy journey.

Genetic counselors work closely with expectant parents to help them better understand inherited conditions, screening results, family history, and potential pregnancy risks. Patients have access to advanced prenatal screening and diagnostic testing, along with individualized counseling and support to help families make informed decisions with confidence and compassion.

UConn Health’s Maternal-Fetal Medicine team plays a critical role in caring for patients with high-risk pregnancies and is experienced in identifying and managing serious pregnancy complications before they become life-threatening. Specialists care for patients facing complex maternal and fetal conditions including placenta accreta spectrum disorders, preeclampsia, fetal growth concerns, multiple gestations, and other high-risk pregnancy complications that require advanced monitoring and coordinated multidisciplinary care.

The Maternal-Fetal Medicine team works closely with specialists to create individualized care plans for mothers and babies facing the most medically complex situations. Their expertise in early detection and coordinated intervention allows many patients to safely continue pregnancies that otherwise could have devastating outcomes. Earlier this year, the team identified a rare and potentially life-threatening pregnancy complication in one of their patients. Early detection, coordinated care, and advanced maternal-fetal expertise helped deliver a healthy baby despite overwhelming odds. The case underscored the sophisticated level of care available at UConn Health for even the most medically complex pregnancies.

Another important advantage for families delivering at UConn John Dempsey Hospital is its partnership with Connecticut Children’s, whose Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is located directly within the hospital. The collaboration provides immediate access to highly specialized neonatal experts and advanced care for premature or critically ill newborns without families having to leave the hospital or transfer to another facility.

“This integrated model allows mothers and babies to receive seamless, coordinated care all in one location,” said Dr. Richard Wagner, division director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at UConn Health “Having access to advanced maternal-fetal medicine and a Level IV NICU under one roof provides tremendous reassurance for families, especially during high-risk pregnancies.”

In addition to advanced clinical care, UConn Health continues to expand programs that support the overall wellbeing of mothers and newborns.

Last year, UConn Health partnered with Read to Grow to launch the Books for Babies program, ensuring every newborn family receives books and early literacy resources before leaving the hospital, helping foster language development and bonding from the very beginning.

Breastfeeding support is also a cornerstone of maternity services at UConn Health. Certified lactation consultants work closely with families during and after delivery to support infant feeding and maternal health. UConn John Dempsey Hospital is also home to Connecticut’s only hospital-based milk depot for breast milk donations for newborns in need and the only such location in the Greater Hartford region.

“Our goal is to support families through every stage of their journey,” said Luciano. “Whether helping patients grow their families through fertility services, caring for high-risk pregnancies, supporting breastfeeding mothers, or providing newborn developmental resources, we are proud to offer comprehensive care centered on both mother and baby.”

As maternity services continue to grow, the recognition from Newsweek reinforces UConn Health’s position as a leader in women’s and newborn care in Connecticut.

[2429,2231,179,2295
[2209
post-246947","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-awards-scholarships","category-health-well-being","category-uconn-health","category-womens-health
"publishpress_future_workflow_manual_trigger":
["GET
