{"id":248695,"date":"2026-07-22T07:30:04","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T11:30:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=248695"},"modified":"2026-07-22T07:43:39","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T11:43:39","slug":"i-love-ct-but-its-the-season-of-the-ticks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2026\/07\/i-love-ct-but-its-the-season-of-the-ticks\/","title":{"rendered":"I Love CT, But It\u2019s the Season of the Ticks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this year, there was a flurry of reports about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2026\/2026-cdc-data-show-weekly-er-visits-for-tick-bites-higher-than-usual.html\">CDC data showing increased ER visits for tick bites.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In April, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctpublic.org\/news\/2026-04-08\/state-scientists-seeing-unseasonably-high-disconcerting-tick-activity-in-ct\">the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station reported<\/a> that they were seeing more ticks submitted by the community for testing than they usually do at that time of year, likely due to warmer, wetter weather creating ideal conditions for ticks to breed.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/cvmdl.uconn.edu\/\">Connecticut Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory<\/a> (CVMDL) in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cahnr.uconn.edu\">College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources<\/a> (CAHNR), which offers testing services for ticks sent into the lab, has not seen a similar spike.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the lab identified 391 ticks total. Approximately 25% of deer ticks tested positive for <em>Borrelia burgdorferi,<\/em> the pathogen that causes Lyme disease. Maureen Sims, CVMDL laboratory technician, says these numbers are currently expected to be about the same this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne thing we like to point out is that our data is somewhat biased,\u201d Sims says. \u201cWe\u2019re not going out and actively collecting ticks ourselves. It depends on what people submit to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This matches what Tom Worthley, UConn Extension professor of forest sustainability, says he has been seeing in the field (and woods).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t seen a tremendous amount more,\u201d Worthley says. \u201cWhat I have observed is that when I\u2019m in the field with students or I\u2019m in the field with groups or I\u2019m in the field by myself, somebody, not everybody, but somebody always finds a tick on them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most of the samples the CVMDL receives come from Connecticut and elsewhere in New England. Sims says most ticks are ones people find on themselves, with a smaller portion having been attached to dogs, and very rarely, other animals.<\/p>\n<p>The most common tick the CVMDL identifies is the deer tick, followed by dog ticks. They have also received lone star tick submissions for over 15 years. Lone star ticks are the most common carrier of a sugar molecule called alpha-gal. In some hosts, this can lead to an immune response that causes an allergic reaction to red meat. New evidence has shown that alpha-gal transmission can be associated with other species of ticks too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach year, the lone star ticks have increased,\u201d says Zeinab Helal, CVMDL research associate. \u201cThere\u2019s been a gradual increase every year for the submission of lone star ticks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CVMDL has also seen an increasing number of Asian longhorned ticks from areas near the New York border.<\/p>\n<p>CVMDL has identified ticks testing positive for carrying <em>Borrelia burgdorferi, Anaplasma, Ehrlichia <\/em>and <em>Borrelia lonestari<\/em> infections. <em>Borrelia burgdorferi <\/em>is the most common pathogen by far.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re testing for the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, we\u2019re not actually testing for Lyme disease,\u201d Sims says. \u201cLyme disease is a condition that\u2019s caused by infection and is only diagnosed by a healthcare professional.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"grey-sidebar full-sidebar\">\n  \n<p><strong>Tick Tips from UConn Extension<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wear a long sleeve shirt and long pants, and tuck pants into socks while engaging in activities outdoors, such as hiking and gardening.<\/li>\n<li>Treat the outside of your clothes with an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-approved tick repellant.<\/li>\n<li>Once back at home, remove clothing and immediately place in the washing machine and wash with hot water. Drying clothes at high temperature (even without previous washing) is also very effective in killing ticks. Ticks can hitch a ride on your clothing and bite you later.<\/li>\n<li>Promptly shower and perform a tick check. Ticks can bite you anywhere on your body but prefer warmer places such as armpits, behind the knees, around the ears and in the hair.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>If a tick does happen to bite you, don\u2019t panic. You can remove the tick by following these steps:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use clean tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. Be careful not to squeeze the body of the tick during the removal process.<\/li>\n<li>While firmly squeezing the tweezers, pull the tick straight up and out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>DO NOT burn the tick or attempt to smother it by covering with alcohol or Vaseline. This may cause the tick to inject its gut contents into you, increasing the chance of infection.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Once removed, do not crush or flush the tick. Instead, save the tick by placing it on a clean, water-dampened paper towel and in a plastic zip bag. Placing the bagged tick in the refrigerator or freezer will help to preserve it in case you want to show your doctor or have the tick tested.<\/li>\n<li>Wash the tick bite with soap and water and contact your doctor for instructions on what to do next.<\/li>\n<li>If you decide to\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cvmdl.uconn.edu\/tick-testing\/options\/\">have the tick tested<\/a><\/strong>, you can visit the following websites for more instructions on\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cvmdl.uconn.edu\/tick-testing\/how-to-submit\/\">how to submit the specimen<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More information about ticks in Connecticut and how to stay safe is available from <a href=\"https:\/\/extension.uconn.edu\/publication\/protecting-tick-borne-diseases\/\">UConn Extension.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/aside><br \/>\nTicks prefer warm, wet conditions. During periods of drought, ticks are less active, Worthley says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey will hide out in the ground, or near the ground, and wait for more moderate and more humid conditions to take place when they come out. They&#8217;ll forage or exhibit what is called \u2018questing behavior,\u2019\u201d Worthley says. \u201cThey climb up on a tall stalk of grass or a branch of some shrub and hang out at the very tip of it waiting for some warm-blooded creature to walk by that they can grab onto.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While ticks are attracted to warm blood, bug spray can disrupt their ability to actually latch onto you.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re attracted to you by those means, but their final decision about whether to take the bite comes from sensers in their feet that let them know they\u2019re on a surface where there\u2019s blood right below,\u201d Worthley says. \u201cRepellents keep them from biting you because they\u2019ll be attracted to the blood smell, and when they touch your skin and that material is there, their feet will say \u2018uh uh, you don\u2019t want to touch this,\u2019 so it will keep them from choosing to bite.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you are spending time outdoors, UConn\u2019s experts say to be sure to do a tick check afterwards. While outside, using bug spray and wearing long, light-colored clothes, including tucking wide pant legs into your socks, can help keep ticks away.
