The UConn Formula SAE\u00a0team\u00a0had a record-breaking competition season, achieving\u00a0top-five\u00a0finishes in both vehicles, making it the number one team in the country to do so.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The student team designs, builds, and races a Formula-style car, while developing the engineers and leaders that move it forward. For the second\u00a0year, the team built and tested a traditional combustion-powered vehicle, and an electric vehicle.<\/span><\/p>\n

The UConn Formula SAE team competed in two national competitions at Michigan International Speedway\u00a0this summer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In May, the team\u00a0participated\u00a0in the FSAE\u00a0Internal Combustion Competition, placing 4th overall out of 111 teams.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Later in June, the team\u00a0participated\u00a0in the FSAE Electric Vehicle Competition, placing 5th overall out of 89 teams.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Considering these two wins together, the team is the top finisher in the United States.<\/p>\n

“Formula SAE has been one of the most valuable parts of my engineering education,\u201d says outgoing team president\u00a0and engineering student\u00a0Jake Gannon. \u201cIt challenges you to think beyond the classroom, work through real engineering problems, and collaborate with an amazing team. I’m incredibly proud of what we accomplished this season, and I know the foundation we’ve built will help the team continue to succeed in the years ahead.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the\u00a0IC competition, the team had the following results:\u00a09th in cost presentation; 80 points in design presentation, 3rd\u00a0in business presentation; 4.465 seconds in acceleration; 5.092 seconds in\u00a0skidpad, and\u00a06th\u00a0place in autocross.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the EV competition, the team placed:\u00a07th\u00a0in endurance;\u00a05th\u00a0in autocross;\u00a04th\u00a0in\u00a0skidpad;17th\u00a0in acceleration;\u00a04th\u00a0in efficiency;\u00a05th\u00a0in business presentation; and\u00a05th\u00a0in cost presentation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“The Formula SAE team embodies the hands-on, experiential learning that defines our programs,\u201d says School of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Manufacturing Engineering director Horea Ilies. \u201cTheir success reflects not only their engineering talent, but also their ability to innovate, collaborate, and solve complex problems\u2014qualities that prepare them to become leaders in the engineering profession.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The team is open to all\u00a0students, and\u00a0has succeeded\u00a0with the help of students from\u00a0all disciplines including engineering, business, finance, marketing, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Formula SAE gives students an opportunity to apply\u00a0most of the knowledge\u00a0they’ve\u00a0gained\u00a0in the classrooms\u00a0to a real engineering challenge,\u201d says faculty advisor Wajid Chishty. \u201cFrom design and manufacturing to testing and competition, every success is earned through teamwork, persistence, and technical excellence. Seeing our students compete at such a high level is incredibly rewarding.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
