{"id":251414,"date":"2026-08-24T07:01:49","date_gmt":"2026-08-24T11:01:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/?p=251414"},"modified":"2026-08-19T11:11:40","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T15:11:40","slug":"uconn-stamford-students-win-medals-at-fisu-american-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/today.uconn.edu\/2026\/08\/uconn-stamford-students-win-medals-at-fisu-american-games\/","title":{"rendered":"UConn Stamford Students Win Medals at FISU American Games"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A pair of UConn Stamford students recently won medals in the sport of taekwondo at the FISU American Games, held in Lima, Peru in July. The games are held every other year and feature college students from across the Americas.<\/p>\n<p>Melvy Alvarez \u201928 (BUS) won a gold medal in the 58-kilogram division, while David Yehenara \u201927 (CLAS) was a bronze medalist in the 54-kilogram class.<\/p>\n<p>They qualified for the games by winning national titles at the National Collegiate Taekwondo Association championships last Apri in Fresno, California.<\/p>\n<p>Both are active members of the UConn Taekwondo Club.<\/p>\n<p>Alvarez has been active in the sport since he was two years old and has been a member of 11 national teams competing at world championships.
