But they may not always have the resources to support complex mental health needs, according to Gautam.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">As a result, many participants\u2019 significant mental health needs are going unmet. (Courtesy of Roman Shrestha)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">He explains that the team is particularly interested in making sure the screening tool is something that benefits both the clients and staff. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c[Health researchers] always try to think from the patients\u2019 perspective, but we sometimes miss the people who are actually delivering the intervention \u2013 the staff or the healthcare providers,\u201d Gautam says. \u201cWith this project, we wanted to make sure we were exploring that piece \u2013 are they [the providers] comfortable delivering the intervention? Do they have what they need? And at the same time, we don\u2019t want to overburden them.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">At the conclusion of this pilot project, the team will have the \u201cpreliminary evidence needed to develop and test more comprehensive suicide prevention intervention across syringe services programs and other community-based harm reduction settings,\u201d says Gautam.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Nurse Practitioner\u2013Led PrEP<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Another recent initiative from the Shrestha Lab is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ovid.com\/jnls\/janac\/fulltext\/10.1097\/jnc.0000000000000657~nurse-practitionerled-same-day-pre-exposure-prophylaxis\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">publication<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> in the Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (JANAC)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> first-authored by Gautam. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The article is based on findings from another pilot project in New Haven, focused on decreasing barriers to accessing pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). PrEP is an umbrella term for medications that are incredibly effective at preventing HIV \u2013 providing up to 99% HIV protection from sex and up to 74% effective HIV protection from injection drug use, when taken as prescribed.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Still, as with mental health care, it can be challenging for people who inject drugs to access these treatments. Time, money, and logistics all pose hurdles.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For people who use substances, the care can be so fragmented.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cTypically, while trying to get on PrEP, you have to go to a clinic, be seen by a doctor, and then the doctor will have to evaluate your labs before they can prescribe the medication,\u201d says Shrestha. \u201cThis is a huge issue for people who inject drugs, because they have different socioeconomic conditions that will prevent them from getting back to the clinic \u2013 whether it\u2019s transportation, unstable housing, or even lack of a cell phone to get appointment and pickup reminders.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335551550&quot;:0,&quot;335551620&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Through a pilot program called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36222826\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">iRaPID (Integrated Rapid Access to HIV Prevention for People Who Inject Drugs)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, the researchers launched a new approach to PrEP prescription.
