The effort has included activity and resource teams, officer training, and beautification efforts focused on painting, murals, and plantings.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">York and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/portal.ct.gov\/doc\/facility\/garner-ci\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Garner\u00a0Correctional Institution<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a men\u2019s mental health facility in\u00a0Newtown, were the first two\u00a0Connecticut\u00a0sites involved. The initiative\u00a0has expanded\u00a0to include\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/portal.ct.gov\/doc\/facility\/macdougall-walker-ci\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in Suffield, the largest\u00a0correctional facility\u00a0in the Northeast, and the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/portal.ct.gov\/doc\/org\/training-and-staff-development\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Maloney Center for Training and Staff Development<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in Cheshire.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"none\">Designing for\u00a0York<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245418&quot;:true,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559738&quot;:160,&quot;335559739&quot;:80}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The landscape architecture\u00a0component\u00a0for York\u00a0grew from\u00a0a collaboration between Clark and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/plant-landscape.uconn.edu\/person\/sohyun-park\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Sohyun Park<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, associate professor of landscape architecture in the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources (<a href=\"http:\/\/cahnr.uconn.edu\">CAHNR<\/a>).\u00a0 <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cThis is not a typical site,\u201d\u00a0says\u00a0Park. \u201cI thought it would be important for us to help with those environments that had not been healthy for both inmates and staff members. There was a lot of potential to increase the beauty of the space and make the spaces more like a human environment for mental health relief.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Park incorporated what became known as the York Normalization Project into a spring 2025 syllabus for her plant design course. Because of security restrictions, students could not bring phones or cameras into the facilities. Officers reviewed the work on large poster boards in the\u00a0building\u2019s\u00a0atrium before attending presentations, where each student explained how their ideas would\u00a0benefit\u00a0the facility.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">One of Jiang\u2019s designs focused on expanding an existing officer memorial area by creating two connected pathways \u2014 one for gathering and reflection, and another designed as a quieter, more reflective space. One proposed tree had to be\u00a0relocated\u00a0after\u00a0crews discovered buried\u00a0concrete beneath the planting site.\u00a0Another tree selected for an officers\u2019 break area was moved after staff realized its mature height\u00a0could eventually\u00a0create visibility\u00a0concerns.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cYou just have to be really, really flexible,\u201d\u00a0says\u00a0Jiang.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For\u00a0Jiang, the experience\u00a0represented\u00a0the rare opportunity to follow a project through every stage of development.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cActually\u00a0going through the entire process,\u00a0from site analysis all the way down to planting the tree,\u00a0was the main thing that drew me to the project,\u201d she says.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For many of the students, the biggest takeaway was the perspective they gained from working directly with the people who live and work inside\u00a0correctional facilities.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jiang says her experience\u00a0at\u00a0York changed her\u00a0previous\u00a0perceptions\u00a0of prisons, which were\u00a0largely shaped\u00a0by popular culture.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt felt like I was working alongside people that I could be friends with outside the facility,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Park initially wondered whether students might feel uncomfortable working alongside incarcerated individuals, but those concerns quickly faded.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThey worked together without prejudice or barriers. They\u00a0were just\u00a0in\u00a0that moment,\u201d she says. \u201cPlants have a power.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0collaboration reflects a growing body of research showing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that\u00a0caring for plants\u00a0can provide routine, responsibility, and a sense of purpose. These\u00a0benefits that\u00a0can be particularly meaningful in environments where individuals have limited\u00a0control over their daily surroundings.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cCorrectional facilities\u00a0can be\u00a0very negative, stressful environments,\u201d\u00a0says\u00a0Smith. \u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0easy to forget how much our surroundings affect the way we feel.
